I have been having some trouble with my mixed reef.

Small bitsof my green tip hammer have been flying around in my tank. And when these bits fly, the tend to stuck to some SPS. This will cos some tissue burns on the SPS.. :eyeblur::sick:

So i was just wondering, can SPS and LPS like hammers, frogspawn mixed??

If you need to keep frogspawn or hammer, keep the shorter version that dont stretch so long and also play around with your powerhead/wavemaker so the flow will not promote the LPS to stretch.

Have a few stn sps when I keep the long version hammer and it keep stretching so long till it break off and stick to the sps, eventually the sps stn. Now I kept the shorter version hammer and it doesn't stretch itself so long and break loose. My sps is safe now.

Below is a pic of the shorter version hammer.

It is all about structuring your flow so that the LPS stay away from the SPS!

yes, i agree with that. as long as you provide a suitable water flow, u can miz the SPS with LPS, but please make sure that ur SPS and LPS have their space to grow. dont get so near to each other.

hope it's work!! :eyebrow:

i've heard that chemical warefare does not even need physical contact... is this true?

True, but not in LPS... more like Softies like leathers etc from my experience.

LPS/SPS will just throw sweepers out to take out the enemy coral

Yeah I agree with Bandit although my digitatas are growing fast despite being next to a huge leather (I'm selling it so any takers can PM me).

But if you tame me, we shall need each other.

Bro,

if bits of the coral is flying around, it means there's something wrong wif the coral... so be careful about it... :P

Hmm...I think it's more of the hammer stretching and then the tips torn off.

That's why have some bits flying around. My hammer is near the sandbed where the flow is the min.

Unlikely it'll tear off, do u see any branches that's receding?

read somewhere that leather cannot go with sps becos of chemical warfare, resulting in sps losing in the end. how true is that? this is the reason why i have not tried sps yet till now :eyeblur:

Mixed reef is difficult least to say sps dominated tank. Every species has it own needs and requirement.

I think placement of LPS is very important in a mixed reef tank. LPS requires moderate flow and lights. SPS usually needs high flow and high lights.

Normally placing LPS on the bottom is prefered, and sps on higher plane is better. high flow rate on the top, and lower flow rate on the bottom.

My 2cents worth. B)
