White Pointer
Hi fellow reefers, I had my skimmer for about 2 months from a local sponsor. My skimmer is on 24/7 and there are basically 2 school of thought, skimmer or skimmless. The question that I am raising is: 1) Do any reefers out there use a timer eg. 12/7 2) As for the type of skimmer, do you need tuning each time the skimmer come back on. The beckett that I am using need just that. 3) Any result? The reason that I am asking is: 1) So we can dose phytoplankton, trace element, iodine etc 2) Save a bit of the electricity 3) What ever good stuff that in the water will be fully utilised by the corals and fish Plan to put my skimmer on a timer from 11pm to 11am - 12/7 cheers

SRC Member prec Posted June 25, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted June 25, 2005 Hi fellow reefers, I had my skimmer for about 2 months from a local sponsor. Leaving the skimmer off for long periods of time will not be advisable for a reef tank. It takes time for the foam to re-built and by the time it gets stabilised again and skimming, its time for it to be off again.. No point right? Normally skimmers shldn't need any more tuning after turning off and on.. There may be something wrong with the pump or skimmer. Do check. 2) Save electricity? I guess that's shouldnt be one of the main concerns when it comes to Reefkeeping. If so, you may just choose a FOWLR and a PL tube will just eb sufficent for viewing purposes. If you intend to keep corals, then electricity costs shouldnt be so much of a factor.. you'll regret.. try convincing those reefers that they shouldn't blast their SPS tanks wtih 2 x 150W MH and they'll start giving u those kind of "DUH" look. Think carefully bro..
SRC Member Kelmen Posted June 27, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted June 27, 2005 IMO: I don't recommend put skimmer on timer. If you think you overskim, you may tune down its performance, or give the skimmer a break in a weekly or monthly basis. Many skimmer need to be "warmup" to really kick in and work. You are running it on unefficientcy.
White Pointer
Thanks for the replied fellow reefers, since I need to wash the cup of the skimmer every week, may let it run skimless for a couple of hours. Can take this opportunity to add some additives and feeding the corals with DT oyster egg or cyclopeezes. Cheers
