DISCUS LAID EGGS!!

Hi guys,

Sorry ah.. FW stuff again..

Anyone has experience with discus? My pair just laid eggs a few hours ago... I was expecting this for some time already coz I can see the way they behave, shaking and all...

In anycase.. i have never raised discus babies.. what should i do?

Read some online stuff but don't think quite applicable coz mine is planted tank.. they laid their eggs on a leaf... and there are many other fishes around waiting to gobble up any fry that might emerge...

You must separate the eggs from the other fishes or else they will be eaten

once the fries are hatched you can feed them with baby brine shrimps..

Remove the other fish from the tank if you wan to raise the fries... If not you can get leave them alone...

The fries will stick to the leaf(for your case) till they become free-swimming and they will start to wriggle and swim, the parent discus will take care of the eggs till they are able to feed on their own... Need not worry about the fries when they hatch... the fries will feed on the mucus found on the adult body...

Discus are practically responsible parents...

Not really convert from a FW to SW... Just that my uncle breeds discus and sell discus lor... So know a bit...

watch out for ur water quality and temp. do not stress the parents, they might eat the eggs.

the chances of the eggs being eaten up is very high though

anyway usually the first few spawns of the fish won't be too successful.. esp if the male is still rather young ie < 1yr old

well removing the other fishes from the tank isn't an option... so i guess the fries (if they even hatch) will have to fend for themselves for now...

So basically no stress.. okie got it... my platy babies made it though... saw a few swimming around...

my dad used to be into discus many years ago. he used a wire mesh attached to sucker pads to separate the eggs from the discus. this way they wun get eaten.

First time spawners tend to eat their own eggs due to inexperience. I would rather let them gain this experience and over time they will be better parents and you can leave the eggs with them without any problems. If feeding the fry is a hassle for then you leaving them with the parents is a better choice as initially they will feed on the mucus coat of the parents.

Hm... i might try to seperate the discus parents and their eggs from the other fishes in the tank by a wiremesh and suckers... will this work?

Oh yah here's a photo of the protective parents.. they've been chasing away the other fishes the whole day!

btw, they are brown discus so they look almost black in the photo...

U can look for Chai of Chai Discus at Commonwealth or Simon Pak at Woodlands. Discus breeding is common, it depends whether the male fertilized the eye, otherwise 3 days all eggs will turn white, and the parent fish will breed again after few days later.

yah tried looking but I don see anything leh... i heard they are attracted to any dark objects... looked at my wood also don't see anything wriggling... how small should they be?

Hi, the size of the hatched fries is about the same as the eggs. The eggs should be orangy in color and then turned black in the 3rd day. Then it start to wriggle in the next 2 days in same spot and free swim in day 6. The parents will pick up those stray away fries and put them in the same spot or transfer them to other safe place. In your pic, the eggs are white so highly possible that they are not fertilized. They will be eaten up when they turned bad.

Till now I'd not heard any successful spawn in planted tank. U may consider putting the parents in their own tank if u wanted to have better success.
