Removal of Electric Build-up of Tank

I just setup a 3' tank using an internal IOS filteration system. While doing some

routine checking of the water parameter, I was quite suprised to get some electric

shock.

I use a A/C test pen to test the tank and realised that some current is present on

the following area;

1. the water itself.

2. the glass (top and side) separating the IOS and the main tank.

3. the bracing glass.

4. the top edge of the glass tank.

5. the PVC pipe which the salt water passing thru.

These currents only appeared when the pump is being swich on or when there are

flow of the water current.

Had tried to use a cable to earth down to an iron support but the current still appeared

in the abovementioned area. The other end of the wire also found to contain current.

Any experts can help me to resolve this problem.

Hi,

how old is your pump? Could there be possible electric leakages in the internal of the pump?

Besides the pump, what other electrical appliances are you using?

There may be possibility in high static electricity building up around that area of your house (I guess).

These may help (electrical experts ... but not me) to diagnose your problem.

Qazwer

Even implemented the earth probe, you still need to find the culprit. Earth probe doesn't help resolve the problem, only reduce bad accident from happending (fire, explosion, melt-down, cooking your fish etc).

Doesn't really need expert to find the faulty device, unless you mean "fix" it. Just find the thing, and replace with new one, unless you got other reason over this.

Simple: switch off electrical parts, on 1 by 1, and test the leak by the testpen.

Thanks members for all your reply and advise.

I initially suspected the submerged pump is the culprit. But after I switch off my

main pump and placed a new smaller submerged pump into the tank (just act as a wave maker), current was also detected. The only different is that this does not give me that type of electric shock feeling.

I went further to check on my existing fresh water tank and electric current was also found but the electric shock feeling was not present.

Presently I am usually a 2000L/hr pump for my 3' IOS tank which I had been using for my fresh water fish and it never give me this electric shock problems.

Now I am quite confuse what is the main reason for this electric shock feeling, should I get a smaller pump? Or any better suggestion? What it mean by 'earth probing' of the electrical appliances and how to do it for the pump?

The earth probe usually is a peice of metal (titanium, resist corrosive salty water) placed in the tank water. This thingy got a wire, usually ended with a 3 pin socket, but only the "earth" wire is used, the other 2 empty. Put it on a socket.

chk with your LFS for more fancy story.

Thanks for your reply, any idea which aquarium can we get this?

Anyway, I went to buy another submersible pump (resun brand) to replace my old pump and it proved to be worthy. No more current in water / glass anymore. That's make me think the rest of my pumps also got problems. Better get it changed. :D
