2 feet tank

Recommended Posts

Dear all,

I'm a aquatic lover and is currently thinking of setting up a marine fish tank. For a start, I would like to use a 2 feet tank. I anticipated that I will encounter some problems. Therefore, I need some advise on the following ...

* What should be the thickness of the 2 feet tank or normal 2 feet tank will do?

* What should I look out before and after setting up the tank?

* What kind of basic equipments should I need for marine tank?

* How many fishes can I put in a 2 feet (supposing that all fishes and living things are friendly to one another)?

* Should I lay coral sand as a base?

* Can I use a fan (like those used for fresh water) instead of a chiller?

Please kindly assist me on the above questions as I'm quite new to this hobby.

Thanks a lot in advance.

The reason why its difficult to answer your questions because we do not know what you want to keep. I tell this to many people who came to our booth during Aquarama that it is almost impossible to tell you a hard and fast way as to what equipments to buy, what fishes to keep.

Everyone has their own unique way to maintain his system so unless you give us a more detailed question, we cannot help you. Remember, you mould how you want your tank to be, not us.

Try asking like "Are wrasses compatible with small gobies?"

This will usually reap some replies

But if you tame me, we shall need each other.

To me, you will be unique in all the world.

To you, I shall be unique in all the world...

You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.

Hi qazwer,

Warm welcome to SRC :D

Blue heaven is quite right, the qns are too general and we cannot really answer u as different kind of setup have different requirements.

For a start, u can dO some readin up abt marine fishkeeping. From there you will have a clearer picture and can choose what kind of set-up u want. Ie Just Fishes or with corals and what kind of corals etc.

The book that got me started was "The Marine Aquarium" by Nick Dakin. U can find copies from the libraries.

Alternatively, u can browse thru the "New to the Marine Aquaria Hobby" forum where u will find similar beginners qns being posted, and sure u can understand more from there. Once u know more and have specific qns in mind, that's when the 'old birds' can share their experiences with u.

Here are just a few general guidelines when starting a new marine tank:

1) We should go for the biggest tank possible, that is within ur budget. Cos the large volume will allow more room for mistake shd u commit any. ANd also, larger tank gives u more space to display ur creativity in rock-scaping later on.

2) U will need filtration for ur marine tank. Do read up more on this, but beware of cannister filter, UGF or over-head filter. These filters are not encouraged in mArine fishkeeping.

3) Lightings are very important if u intend to keep corals, so do read up more. There are several useful links in this forum as well.

4) Lastly, just read up and have patience. This way, u will save time, effort and money :P

Hi blueheaven and Marine enthusiast,

Thanks for the comments. I'll take note of that.

Just want to know generally about marine keeping (eg. "You should look out for...", "2 feet tank is (not) suitable...", "<this equipment> is a must for marine...")

Anyway, thanks again for replying. :)

Guess I have to read up on books.

IMO:

Maybe you should start from "what" you like to be in your 2' tank? And don't be too "ambitious" or "greedy" want this and that and that that that... :P

Fish -> some are easy to keep, some are not. Beautify fishs many are very picky, in term of water quality, food. Many of these "beauties" also may not reef-safe.

Coral -> same, some easy to keep, less demanding, some are not.

Marine Invebrate -> same same story.

So, its very "simple" in start... "what" 's the "main star" you wanna keep?

example, setting a Nemo tank is different with Seahorse tank.

Hi keithtanbb,

Sound interesting. By the time I'm more experience, I could buy some seahorses from you.

Hi Kelmen,

Thanks for the advise. I guess I have to plan before putting them together.
