RESUN MD55 - Noise,heat, and Confusion

Hello everyone,

I'm a new member here. Actually I live and work in Bangkok, and I've ordered a Beckett skimmer to be made in Singapore. I've been told the skimmer needs a Resun MD 55 pump to run it.

I've read some posts that people think this pump runs quite hot (does it have a cooling fan like the iwaki MD 55?) and can be noisy. I don't have a chiller but was considering a fan cooling system. Also that is consumes a lot of electricity. IS it the 170w model that people use?

Anyway any opinions about this pump would be appreciated AND....

Anyone with a Not-Too-Old Used Resun MD 55 for sale, please contact me.

i've been using a md55 for past 2 mths

my opinions on it based on my limited experience:

it does have its own cooling fan and it does run quite warm, noise it generates is barely audible.

but i can't speak for other users nor can i speak for its performance in the long run.

i believe it consumes 100W at 50hz and 220-240V voltage supplied by Singapore and Bangkok.

btw, just curious, are you Thai or a Singaporean working in Thailand long term?

Alternative pumps you could consider would be Rio hyperflows.

I'd originally thought that a Resun MD 55 would introduce less heat into the system than a Rio HF, as it's external while the HF is submersible-only (is that right?). Also because Rio's have a bad reputation for electrical shorts etc. on some other reef forums in the past. What size tank and what size skimmer are you running?

I've got a 500L tank, and the skimmer will be a 24" beckett. Someone elso on here, Eric, has advised me that the md 55 would create too much turbulence and big bubbles in a small skimmer. What's your experience?

I'm also running a 500L tank like yours.

i'm running the md55 on a 32" beckett.

i can't comment on md55 and its effects on a mini since i've never had the experience...anyway, i'm clueless about technical aspect of beckett.

people recommend me to use md55 with 32" so i just follow

btw, which part of Bangkok are you at?

Shoelevy, I'm near Central Ladprao, not far from jatujak (heh heh).

I'm thinking I should go for a 32" or more too, since the Resun md 55 can handle it anyway - taller is better! If you're around sometime I'd like to see how you've set yours up...

so does that mean you're gonna just be keeping fishes? or have you gone into the underground trade?

Yes, amazingly I just found that out too - wondered why I never saw any hard corals at Jatujak!!! Thailand's contradictions are crazy. EVERYTHING is illegal at Jatujak, yet it still gets sold there. Still, people DO keep hard corals here, quietly.

Right now though I'm more interested in setting up a ceph tank for cuttlefish. They are very dirty but must have VERY clean water. And a good skimmer.

I'm here on a work permit and VISA tight now. I do plan on making a trip to Singapore sometime to buy good quality carbon, equipment, etc. which is very hard to come by and very expensive here in Thailand.

Illegal but still available in Bangkok, some LFS in Chatuchak have back room for illegal stuffs/corals, also if you join the local marine group, they will bring you to some places/home when ever there is new supply of 'illegal' corals.

i do live there...on certain months of the year

but in thailand, there's so much to see and do...already kept busy with other things! so no need to keep marine tank there
