Rock Policy

Need advice on my rock policy. at the moment mi LR when spread out in the tank from end to end covers oni about 30% of the height of the water level. I was meaning to bring in like 10 more kg and fill it up but am thinking whether is this advisable. So just need to ask whether what u guys/gals tink about rockwork and issit the more the merrier? we all know LR is good for breaking down the bad stuff, and in my opinion i feel that more LR means i can stack my corals higher too... but den again lower LR height will mean more space for fish to swim and probably more different height options for corals. My tank is a 30x18x18inch which aint veri big which i tot should have more rock so that fish and other critters will have more space to hide (tat way they wont commit suicide on me)

Your advice pls... tks!

I am of late prone to 'less LR, more open space' school of thought... too many tanks are of the 'rock wall' look.... and when you dive... you see stuff like pinnacles, valleys, caves, sand lagoons... and so I try to recreate that for my new tank.

Many corals are sand dwelling and reefers place them on rocks mostly.

Did you know that elegance corals are found on sandbeds, lying on THEIR SIDES? ;)

If you have a narrow tank like my old one, I have caves at the bottom and the rock wall look above.

For my new tank's landscaping... I use rock racks to free up more space below for maximum flowthrough of water circulation and rock only to hold up some corals up higher mostly.

To me, if you have a 'true' DSB (6" or more), you won't need much LR for denitrifying effect anyway, as a DSB has a much much wider surface area compared to an equal or more amount of LR.

My advice to you is to do what you want... I think its a personal preference unless you are telling me that you are a true berlin style person, or if you have a very shallow sandbed, 1 or 2", then the more LR the better for your system.

Hey, creetin, saw ur post in the about forums

AFter adding the buffer, calcium and magnesium i noticed some growth in the coralline but also noticeably there were some areas which are green or even bright green like those kinda green mushroom color. Is that CA? Best thing is, i dun even have this color/species of CA thats green in the first place.

I have a strain of bright green coraline algae. It really glows under the actinics. Its very posible you also have some. Pink and purple are just the colors you most times.

O.K thats great hold of on the calcium and add the buffer slow for a few days. And it will lower the ca. a bit as it comes up. You want 12dkh and 450 ca But just take your time. it'll happen.

yeah Tangster, will keep to get regime as close as possible. feel like turning off my skimmer....but den again i have my canister whose intake i feel is ###### up all the CA spores too! u tink thats possible? i have been wondering why the piece of LR near it is still white and no green/pink specks at all... or did the LFS rip me off there ie... not a LR rock......?

Perhaps both tangster n sushimama can advise on my rock policy. at the moment mi LR when spread out in the tank from end to end covers oni about 30% of the height of the water level. Depends on the type of fish you wanna keep. My tanks full of rock, but I have smaller fish that like to swim & like to hide.

Acherly its cos i like to hear different views... In this hobby, theres always one thing that someone is advocating (first few visits to SW LFS left me dazed and confused) and I find it better to read more before deciding......

I don't like the rock wall concept that was previously popular with Berlin methods of fishkeeping. Now with DSB, less rock can be used, so I went for the less rock more lacey/lattice look. Lots of caves and bridges. I need all the space I can get to for corals to grow out and with less rock there is better water circulation.

Most LFS give lousy advice. Don't listen (too much at least) ;)
