coral chip in sump

Need to seek expert advise if I need to take out all the coral chips in my sump and wash them. My tank is up for about 1.5yrs already, tks

No!..don't wash your coral chips with tap water!...the purpose of the coral chips is to keep the bacteria and stuff in it..if u wash it all away it will lose it bacterias in it..

Just remove and dump them away. Replace the compartment with a good skimmer.

Coral chips are useless as when waste matter gets trapped in them,the waste will decompose and produce NO3 and stuff like tat..

So what should I repalce with if I remove the coral chip. I already had a skimmer in another compactment the middle portion.

Do we leave the rest empty??

Let me expalin, there are actually 3 compactment, the first where the water comes in is a tower with several layer compactment, that where I put the coral chip, in the second layer of the first compactment (submerged in water), wools and some bio bal is in the first layer (above water) of the first compactmentl, the middle compact is a skimmer, the last compactment is a return eheim pump where water is pump back to the main tank.

So if i remove the coral chip in the first compact put what then?

If possible, shift the skimmer pump to the first compartment cos that's where the detritus/particles are. 2nd comparment you can leave it empty or put in live rocks for copepods, plankton to multiply. 3rd compartment will be ur chiller pump and return pump.

During water change just siphon off any carried over detritus at the 2nd/3rd comparment.

When I custom make the sump, did not provide provision for skimmer. I had dismantle the glass partion in the centre so that skimmer is inside. Nw left 2 compartment, the return together with skimmer in 1 comp. The coral chips in another comp. So can I totally remove all the coral chips in the 1st comp and put in LR. On top of the live rock, cotton wool resting on the strainer.

You do not need any cotton wool or coral chips in 1st comp. Just remove everything and try to put the skimmer pump there. Your skimmer can put at 3rd comp no problem, just leave the pump at 1st comp.

Maybe if you can attach a pic of ur sump, it will help.
