Bro....for a cheaper solution.....reduce your photo period, reduce your feeding, feed dry food only (pallets), increase the frequency of water change and employ wet skimming for a couple of days.

If you impatient, use a brush to brush out those that are growing on LR and use a sucker to suck it up from the sand bed as well.

I managed to control mine after heeding Alan's advise. Though not totally but its is definately improving. I didnt even use the Red Slime Powder I bought (in case I lost my patience).......Thanks Alan! ;)

May the force be with you!

Need some advice on algae. My water parameter are as follows

Kh: 10 (Test kit: Tropic Marine)

Ph: 8.2 (Test kit: Tropic Marine)

Ca: 430 (Test kit: Salifet)

Mg: 1300 (Test kit: Salifet)

NO2: 0 (Test kit: Salifet)

NO3: 5 (Test kit: Salifet)

NH4: 0 (Test kit: Salifet)

PO4: 0 (Test kit: Salifet)

Photo period: 10 - 12 hrs

Clean up crew:

8 turbo snails

4 Sally lightfoot

12 Blue legged hermit crabs

3 Sea cucumbers

LS:

1 Red Sea Sailfin Tang

1 Sailfin Tang

1 Foxface

1 Long nose hawkfish

1 6 line warrse

1 Coral beauty angel

3 Fire Shrimp

2 Peppermint shrimp

Tank spec:

3 x 2 x 2

Rio 32HF return

Eheim 1262 chiller pump

PC Chiller 26 - 28 C

2 Seio 820

Beckett Skimmer w/ iwaki MX70

FR w/ Rowa phos

18W UVC

Problem:

Some of my LR (upper tier one)as infested with hair algae (whole rock became one big cump of green & hairy algae). The bottom tier rocks are covered by coralline. Clean up crew don't go up to clear the algae from the rock.... Can advice why algae grow so well?

mmmm, with a powerful skimmer, excess nutrients may not be a problem so far. You have stated PO4 at 0, so that only left with your lights. Older bulbs/tube can get thier spectrum shifted that may have encourage thier growth. Plus, too long photoperiod can also conttributes to it. You may wan to take a look at this area.

Suggest you either use a brush to scrub and siphon them out or remove the rock to be clean outside the aquarium. They will never go away, but you can control them

Cut down your MH photo period to 9hrs. I notice algae and diatoms everytime I try to bring up the photoperiod to 10hrs.

Feed sparely at intervals once every 2-3 days.

Water change every week.

Isn't red slime = cyanobacteria?

I recently try an approach getting from ReefCentral:

I cut a cheap car-mat to a proper size, then use it to cover the cyano area. Is to block out the light for them, as they need it. I removed the rubber after 1 week, looks better. :)

But some still start to grow back :(

Well, at least I can try again, maybe longer period

If it is cyano, my guess is it probably will hurt the lie stocks... If it grows on on your coral, it might irritates them , some fish will lost apetite after accidently feed on them and starve to die..

my two cents...

Try the high resolution for the salifert PO4 test then see if your PO4 is still undetectable?
