ERM.. thats neither a crocea nor maxima... its always a misconception that all maxima have scute on the shells.... Anyway that maxima looks ok but monitor closely.. Oh ya if you think that its a crocea cos its attach to rocks, FYI maxima do live on rocks too ;););) Its a maxima cos it has a very butterfly liie mantle, more curvy and also its shell is not as "fat" as those of a crocea.. nevertheless, they need strong lighting to do well...

PS:those not sure abt the clam ID try not to say... You are leading ppl wrongly :lol:

Are you very sure that it is a maxima?

I know it is not crocea.

This clam is definite a squamose when i brought, but i was confuse as i had another squamose that had a very different shell shape from what this clam is, and this clam sim to have the same shell shape and mantle as what chrisyew has posted.

The only diffferent was the colour pattern. Chrisyew clam colour pattern is more of maxima colour pattern, but the shell is different from what maxima has (slightly long shell for maxima).

Just to clear the doubt as everyone is learning from one another.

Does any one see any different between this two clam. If my clam is just only 3 inch, will it be the same as chrisyew clam.

Or is this a hybrid between maxima and squamose??

your pic is rather blur.. looks to be a squamosa judging from scute and mantle pattern.... Anyway not all clams of same species have same shell designed and shape(in other words not uniform shell pattern)... maxima from certain area may varies from the maxima in another area......

Anyway your shopuld be a squamy.... Maybe a better pic can help ;)

thioeh's pic clearly shows the 'edge' that I refer earlier.  It is a squamosa.

FYI... maxima, squamosa, derasa all have scute(correct term... your term is call edge ;) ) on their shell.. even some crocea has scutes ;);) so with edge doesn't mean the clam is a squamosa.... the dist of scute from the next one is one of the way to tell a max from a squamy....

Ok be more detailed.... maxima scute are usually quite compact together while squamy scutes are more further apart.. Like i say no clam is alike so the above mentioned just applies for most cases ;)

Yes, the edge show that it squamose, but this edge only develop when it reach the size of around 5 inch (present 7 inch). This can be shown clearly on my 1st pic.

Maybe this squamosa is from some other region, I had another squamose where you can clearly see all the edges started from the bottom of the shell and is slightly lower in height as compare to this and is almost 10 inch big.

This is why i confuse when i saw chrisyew clam pic posted, as the clam shell profile is almost same as mine if you will to see it as small size. The only different is chrisyew clam had a maxima colour and pattern mantle, while mind had the squamose colour and pattern mantle.

If chrisyew clam is confirm maxima, than is normal. if it confirm a squamose, than that should be a rare species as squamose hardy seen such a nice colour and pattern mantle. This is what i am keen to know.

Eh once again, FYI ard 90% of the maximas have well developed scute... you must be so lucky or what, every maximas you see no scutes or maybe you are looking at the wrong species of clams ;);) .... In fact thats one of the best way to tell a maxima(of course with developed scute) to a crocea(with less to no scutes) ;)

My teardrop did have really small scutes....

But if you tame me, we shall need each other.

To me, you will be unique in all the world.

To you, I shall be unique in all the world...
