answer to all 3.... THROW AWAY!!!!

if you running sump/refugium... DSB is enuff....

use bioballs(top layer) , followed by coral chips(center) and ceramic rings( submerged) ... after your tank have matured .. slowly remove the substrate over time.. get a good skimmer

In my opinion, I would not use all three. The reason is because they tend to trap

detritus and food particles over time. If you do use them, then regular rinsing would

be advised. But still, if I really have to, I'll choose the bioballs over the other two.

I would prefer to rely on good liverocks and skimmer. Cheers.

starting off u cannot just remove everything.. add bio balls to let bacteria colonise... wait for ur tank to mature than remove it lo

remember to wash ur bio balls weekly with salt water

Pardon me, if I read him correctly, I think this is a new setup.

So I think it is OK to start with just LRs. Upon cycling, the bacteria will colonise the LRs.

ya i agreed with mr william...use good and lots of live rocks, a good skimmer and it should be enough...this is how i am running my system now. use to have bioball and lots of coral chips and biohome (supper expensive) but now has taken all out.

in my tank now is bare bottom, live rocks, and a H&S skimmer. no sump or refugium.......but need to limit the number of live stocks you put inside and change water regularly

Thanks for all the many replies!! I love you guys!!

One last question, I know normally I would go with a skimmer cos to me its a LIFESUPPORTMACHINE.

But this time I want to do without it. Mainly becos I'm going to only have pure inverts, and shrooms and yumas. - Jus pure rock/sand AND WATERCHANGES (Tropic marin) , dont 4get this is a nano

If something dies, I'll put on my Prizm Skimmer and skimm for a day :P heh

What do you think?

CHeers!!!!

If you control your stocking, I think it'll work.

Try to detect and remove a dying specimen before it decomposes.

Since the nano's volume is not huge, you can also consider a 50%

water change if you suspect that your water condition is very bad.

This is in addition to the skimming you intend to do.

Hope this helps.

if you already had a skimmer, why not put it to use 24/7? since you already say that they are the tank life support system.

What happens if something dies in the middle of the nite while you are in dreamland?

water change is always encourageable but I find they are not to be related to a use of skimmer.
