Brittle stars

my tank sudden got outbreak of brittle stars, its mostly in my sump and the sides of the tank. . there must be at least hundreds of them. From wad i understand. . they are scavengers and thus beneficial to the tank. Since my tank has a outbreak of britte stars, does it also mean that my water quality is stable to promote such growth?

well, at least if your LS is still up and jumping, then i suppose your water is fine. I dun see much link to thier existence but you sure got hell of good LR there with them as hitchiker in large quantity. They are valuable as tank janitor.

The LR are in my tank for more than two months, but i only spotted the brittle stars recently. . seems like they are spawning or something. . everyday i see more of them. . actually i am hoping i will have a sump full of copepods. . lol. .

Hi acidjazz, that's a good sign. :)

thanks :)

at the moment, the corals are doing fine but the fishes are still battling with itch. Therefore i am not too sure if i compromise on the water quality, which promotes itch. I am glad the brittle stars are a good sign. :D

If I may, I'd like to suggest that you stop adding livestocks until you're satisfied with

the water condition and your fishes have recovered from ich.

I think you can probably find some write-ups on the life cycle of ich. It should give you

an idea how long you may have to wait for it to be eradicated from your tank.

But I'm not sure if it can ever be eradicated totally. I believe some fishes may still

be hosting it in their bodies. Just that the ich may not manifest itself if the fish has a

healthy and strong immune system. Once water quality drops or when the fish is

stressed, the ich may show itself again.

This is what I'm given to understand. Would appreciate it if other reefers could

share their insights into this as well.

Cheers.

bro seamonkee touch on the topic of itch recently and it seems that it may take as long as 6-8 weeks for the itch to disappear completely. I've a total of 4 tangs n since the pbt went up e lorry, currently left with 3 and i find it weird that the naso tang is the only one which manage to steer clear of itch so far. .

bro acidjazz,

you may wan to try supplementing thier food w garlic guard?

keep water pristine clean and they should recover.

Bro william is rite, dun add anymore LS for now. The last thing you need is another fish that either pick up the ich; more fish, more ich. more headache.

Ever consider running UV to rid of the free swimming parasites?

thanks bro for the advice, already started supplementing their food with kent marine garlic a few days back. They are still feeding normally despite the itch.

actually i sold away e UV light a month back bcuz i have no space to fit it in and the results of the UV light is pretty vague. Some reefers claim it helps while others tried but failed. . :)

those brittle star are there to help clean up uneaten food and detritus. They also help to shift the sand which is good if you are on a DSB

well, you dun really get to see them when they are. They are most active in the nite. I suppose its thier instinct to take cover from possible predators when they are that small. :D
