dyed corals are very attractive and are available in shops

but i am not for this trade as these corals usually do not last long in the aquariums due to the dying process and many are fooled into thinking that they're paying for a coral that is actually that colour...only to be disappointed a few months later when the dye starts coming off

so lets all help each other by compiling a list of dyed corals to raise awareness and lets avoid this trade

:thanks:

1)yellow jewel

2)red suncoral

dendros are one of the most commonly dyed specimens

anemones too

But if you tame me, we shall need each other.

hey DA, did you take yiling's sun or reborn's sun photos?

xenith...unfortunately i don't think there's anyway to tell if a coral is dyed unless the coral starts losing its dye or unless you educate yourself about what colours are unnatural for what species...that's why this thread i think is very useful to help inform reefers of what colours to be aware of....i was able to tell the red sun in reborn's tank is dyed because the colour started fading, its turning orange :erm:

wa rav65, got red natural coloured sun ah...my goodness...would love to see it, do you have the pics? i can't seem to find red sun coral pics on google :)

Yup, there are real yellow cup corals, often referred to as scroll coral or tuberinia ( dunno if correct spelling :paiseh: ) as they are from Fiji... There are also some that are dyed yellow... :P

I saw the red sun coral in RC b4... under certain light, it seems to be intense pink... under certain light seems red... :P

although its good to have a list like this to warn reefers of "dyed" corals...

but wat authority do you have to determine which coral is real and which is "dyed" just by having a look at it? unless you have the knowledge of reef gurus like Eric Bourneman etc....not many reefers, even SENIOR ones...will be able to tell.

take for example the red sun coral, there are red sun corals ard...check RC, its certainly real. you won't be able to tell 1st hand if its real or not at a LFS, so should you give the benefit of the doubt to the LFS?

If its me, and its a red sun coral, i'll take my chance and buy it...if it turns out to be the real McCoy, i'll probably laugh at those who thought that it was "dyed"...if it is "dyed", then thats the last dough that LFS will make from me.

how do you tell if it was "dyed" red? check your skimmer....if the skimmate bubbles are pinkish in colour...then you have bought urself a lemon. I have checked with Yiling aka desmond...and his skimmate is not pinkish after 4 days.

just my miserable 2 cents worth.

Commonly dyed corals I've seen include yellow gonioporas, yellow cup corals and purplish pink colt corals. Normally dyed corals don't open as much and they tend to bleach slowly to their death. A good way to guess is to look at the tissue of the coral, it it looks more intensely colored in certain areas compared to the rest it most certainly might be dyed. This can be seen in dyed soft corals. For hard corals its a little harder but how I normally judge is if the coral looks fake, it most probably is dyed. Not forgetting the fluorescent yellow pink/purple tipped anemones, these are most probably dyed.

Always something more important than fish.

hi diabo

your stand is completely right

and i have to agree with you

i understand some disapproval of my strong stand against believing in a red sun coral...the reason of my stand is that i just can't find photos of it, neither could i find info about the red types in 2 books i went through and, unfortunately, my first encounter with it turns out to be a fake :(

i'm not here to create trouble neither here to make others unhappy, i'm only here to learn and share and so i hope after all this talk of a red sun coral, i can truely learn and see an actual one...even if it means just seeing a picture of it

and i must apologise for being carried away sometimes with my words but i guess its a flaw with internet, you can't see my expression :) ...do bear with me sometimes

on a last note, i hope that yiling's sun is doing well and is the real red one because then all of us can chiong and have sth to be excited about!!!

yiling!, do keep us posted on how the sun turns out :)

thanks fuel for the insight! ;)

There are ways to identify some of the dyed corals...

Firstly, one example is the dyed yellow cup, I once used my finger to rub the cup coral and guess wat? The paint/dye came off and I ended up with a yellowish thumb...

Secondly, normally for dyed corals, during the dyeing process, some of the dye stains not only the coral, but the rock it is attached too as well, so just keep a keen eye and look at the coral/rock closely... :P

Thirdly, some of the dye corals do stain the water and end up u can see some colour in your skimmer skimmate, but it also depends on wat skimmer you're using, for me, my beckett churns out loads of gunk, even if there's dye in the water, it gets covered quickly by the shit in the water, so, no chance to tell... :P

Juz my $0.02 worth... dun tink need authority on this... :P

Lfs that do such stuff are real desperate man. Fell sad for the coral. It is bad enough that it is taken away from the sea and being home in aquariums. Dyed?! Now that too much already.

Anyway what is done is done now that I know what to look out for. Lfs that sell dyed corals I will avoid.
