mangrove plants

I was told that mangrove plants help to reduce NO3. Is it true? Saw it selling at a farm at Pasir Ris.

My friends plant them in their main or sump tank, bottom half buried in water. Those plants are doing well but I not sure they help reduce NO3.

Plse advice.

Hmm yes it is true that mangrove plants do reduce nitrate however they are not effective unless you have a very large quantity ( This is not a feasible idea for space constrainted people )

Moreover the mangrove plants have a slow growth rate hance the large amt needed.

This is unlike macroalgae which have very fast growth provided you give them the correct lighting and timing.

Another reason would be that the mangrove plants have rather long and powerful roots.

These will eventually become too large for the average holding tank in time.

From my personal view I would say fast growing macroalgae varieties are a better alternative

I would like to know too. And is it large one? Or just a stalk without leaves type?

I have contributed some articles and photos on mangroves, along with my system.. please search my threads. Mangroves are additional ways to reduce nitrates, phosphates issues. I have a mangrove nursery, along with a macro algae refugium. I grow my own phytoplanktons and because they need fertilizers to propagate fast enough. I need the mangroves,algaes and I am running rowaphos thru a fluidised reactor. mangroves are not only natural they are lovely plants.I keep them near a window to absorb natural sunlight.You should get the red "walking" mangrove variety. BUT I think a refuguim fill with chaetos and some grapes caluerpa's are better.
