Whatever happened to the good old undergravel filter?

I had a tank some 12 years ago based loosely on undergravel filtration and live rocks. It lasted me forever! And i knew then the undergravel was the life line of the aquarium, the very heartbeat of its survival.

It seems so much have changed in this reefing hobby.

Can someone help me to understand this debate on DSB vs Undergravel.

Isn't the DSB a timebomb waiting to happen?
