Mark Leong
Hi guys, need some help on the pros and cons of covering the marine fish tank in my room. Currently, I have just placed a DIY plastic cover above the tank with live rocks - still cycling. The plastic cover sits about 1 inch above the tank, some gap for ventilation. Advantage - with Cover - Keeps the salt away from TV and computer in room Disadvantage - with cover - Raises temperature? - blocks the light (in future) Thinking of any solution to overcome this problem.... Regarding the temperature issue, I might overcome it by purchasing a fan?.. but th light issue, I have no idea. Any inputs will be much appreciated! SRC Member SharkBait Posted September 7, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted September 7, 2003 i think you might as well custom make a hood.you can fit the lights and fan inside the hood.

SRC Member Cleartank Posted September 7, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted September 7, 2003 IMHO, H2O evapourate, salt don't. So if you dun wash you hands or bathe in the tank, your TV will be fine!!!
Merlion
My tank is covered with a hood, but there is a wide rectangular opening for feeding and to cool down the temperature from the heat emitted by the light. From my viewpoint, it is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes to hide all those equipment placed on top of the tank (e.g lights, fans, etc, etc). Moreover, I got wood carvings near my tank and I don't want to get them damage by accidental splashing of saltwater. It is best if you could have a custom made cover done for your fish tank that incorporates lighting and fan fixtures and so on. However, it will add up to your total costs in this hobby. But think of the long term, for example you or your family might keep a pet like a dog or cat in the future and a cover will protect your investment from these pets. Also, visiting children to your home can be devoid of the chance of meddling with your tank, especially the top part and thus relieve you of the worry of having to be constantly on guard whenever they are around. FuEl
Cover is good. Prevents some fish that a prone to jumping to become ikan bilis. Although I had a cover...my fire goby managed to jump out of the ventilation holes twice...I wonder what is the probability of that happening manx...maybe it was plotting all along to escape..evil fish! Luckily i was around when it jumped out on both occassions. Cover also eliminates salt spray.... But then one very troublesome thing is that whenever you have to add corals or remove dying stuff or to restack rocks you have to lift your cover before you can gain access your tank. A cover also might make you feel less pessimistic...especially when they start the USELESS mosquito fogging exercise. I say it is useless as mosquitoes can slimpy fly away and fly back. Mosquito control should be aimed at mosquito larvae. Not the adult mosquito. Oh well....too bad most of the public gets reassured by the mosquito fogging. But I think aquarists like us FROWN upon fogging. We will have to cover our tanks with newspaper in case something in the fog kills all our precious livestock. SRC Member Clownfish Posted September 7, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted September 7, 2003 I think u got onli a few alternatives: 1). cover the aquarium n let the temp rise 2). cover the TV 3). move the aquarium to other places 4). custom make a hood with fan ( incoporate 2 PC fans, 1 air in, 1 air out ) 5). cover totally n buy a chiller. seems to me ur aquarium veri small... u may consider Hailea-080 costing 400+ or Iceprobe from Coolworks (u shld check out price, think is cheaper but harder to use).... hope it helps Quote My Personal Blog My Wedding Website
