personally, IMHO i feel that given the "surprise" that our garmen has given to us, their humble servants, there's no point sulkin' abt it. A decision has been made and the execution with come soon after. In fact, we all know that the moment the casino idea was announced, there're no way the garmen will give up on the idea. in addition, i'm certain that many sg think tanks were also against the idea. thus, perhaps we should concentrate on how can we prevent the probs that we've been (tryin') to warn our garmen abt? or perhaps it is time to make some noise to lower our taxes? i dunno. i jus tot we should assist in fine-tunin' this tough decision.

Agreed. As I mentioned earlier;

Questions I will ask myself is; do you think Singapore will have the means to counter those negative influence from a casino like crime, loanshark, pros, etc. Do you have faith in the NEW leaders to lead Singapore to the NEW Century?

If your answers are no, imho, think of migration but bear in mind, does the country you migrating to aleady have a casino or such?

tat's so true. but jack neo's firm, i do i do, always 'shoot' at the government. "U all got elected even b4 we voted." Just draw them under the same GRC will do. Den no elections are needed. Ok back to the topic. Since the casino is not big enough, some have already feedback it will lose it's crowd eventually. Den i would rather the government to build a F1 racing track than a casino. *only based on my own opinion.

F1 racing is history liao. But we'll have some rally track in Tuas soon. :off:

weisoon seems to be very agree to having casino in sg.. just hope no one will be appearing at the front page on the newspaper. even if so, shld feel proud, first to die for sg casino.  :erm:

I am easy.....not a problem. Tell you the truth, I am neither for or against the casino as personally, I do not gamble, except the once a year lunar new year toto draw. But the worry I have will be like what most have stated-the social impact. It is a fact that Chinese/Asian are gamblers. I do visit casinos nearly round the world when I stop over (due to my job nature) and I can safely say that nearly more than 70% of them in there gambling are Chinese/Asian and this is a hard fact. Hope that I do not get slam for stating this.

I have a friend that gambled so big that the stakes are about $500,000 to $1 mil a night and he does win and loose sometimes but recently he is down and the wife decides to leave him although he is married for more than 25 years. Sad story.

The government's decision to open casinos are mainly for economic agenda. It seems that the country is starting to eat into it reserves to sustain the economy. Anything collected from tax less than the preceeding year will be considered a deficit which I think it is not possible. There will never be an non ending growth year on year. Imagine the shock I had when my company requires 8% growth every year. So where's the end of the road? Infinite growth?

I just wonder why the gov is wiiling to spend abt $20 millinion on coping with the problem gamblers when they going to build a casino.Isn't TOTO. 4D, horse racing etc gambling also?To really think hard this is just a show that they 'care' about your life.

and after a while, when these people are quiet....they'll let singaporeans in like they do with the foreigners....

anyway, just a side off, i think life in singapore getting tougher

china's economic booms, prices of things go up because china contributes to a demand which a supply cannot cope etc etc.

things ex, oil price rise...people needa work harder to earn more to sustain...no place to unwind cos this island so damn small...now that got casino...govenment impose restrictions on locals...can't unwind any more than we did in the past... but these restrictions ought to be in place to counter social problems

ok...i might be wrong about the next part since i'm not an economics student...but IMO: economic boost?...perhaps...but in the macro sense, not the micro economics of individuals because the money generated goes to government to spend on infrastructure...better hospitals and a nicer orchard road (fully air conditioned remember the last time they planned this one?), bigger and better schools (which then command higher sch fees), bigger and better airports, sea ports... yeah these are nice... but the income generated ends up with the government...not much ends up as cash for citizens.i think what most people need is more cash to spend...not bigger and better airports or airconditioned orchard

PS: disclaimer is as my previous posts

Is Singapore a Democracy State ? Thought it is somewhat a Socialist Republic ?

Anyway, perhaps we can think along the line - would it be better off with or without a Casino(s)...in consideration of the country's people, jobs, quality of life, progression, hope, future.....

How would your decision be like if you are the person making the decision on behalf of Singapore if you are accustom to the actual facts and figures of "whats going on" in Singapore.

In the definition of Plato's The Republic, a good state (ideally) is to have a Philosopher King, but this is mostly impossible and the next best thing perhaps to have is probably a group of Guardians to govern the state.

Here we are, we somewhat have a group of "Guardians" and to be honest there are some very people in there.

Then again, if we think its no good in most of the decisions they make, what other options are we left with ?

1) Build ourselves a Vatican City within Singapore and pray for the best ?

2) Gather all NS Men and morph into the Spartan State (which i believe we can given our country's configuration) and conquer neighbouring countries, this which will indefinitely have better future than having Casino. We can be like the Japs too...

3) Make majority of our citizens have PhD and do high-end researches like in Swiss, Europe and that becomes an Industry itself and filter through where other lower-end countries will need ? BUT look at the average person in the street, they are not even there (talk about SG being a Developed State?)

4) Get angry and hurled your 2cents worth and then qualify a disclaimer ? NATO

5) Go on Strike and Riot ?(that reminds me of my experience and time in Italy and England) If You dare...but to what end? You will become the Government or install the next Monarchy or Anarchy ?

6) Migrate and find yourself in a lesser situation over the other Greener Pasture ?

or

7) Have peace within yourself cos you cannot do anything.

Alternatively lets make ourselves an annointed race like the Jews and you will be infallible (to a certain extent) having a certain value system to govern us - but you will be called Aryan...hehheh

Just some of my opinion.

Even if what the government said in support of the casino is true, the timing is all wrong.

By 2009, when the casinos are up, things will have changed dramatically. HK Disneyland will have 4 years of head start. That is four longggg years.

If they really had foresight, then they should have floated this proposal back in 2000 when they saw the downturn coming, and when other countries are upgrading their tourism infrastructure.

It is a case of too little too late.

I kinda agree with bro seamonkee. He got a very solid point. A slap in the face? YES! But as I mention earlier now money comes first. People interest later. Come voting we will see. Because what made singapore what it is today? The people not the goverment. LKY only give us the head start. The rest of the way its the people of singapore. REGARDLESS OF RACE, LANGUAGE, RELIGION AND COLOUR.

I purely have nothing against the goverment. For I am purely voicing out my point of view, the same way as many other singaporean in this country.

All we can do now is just wait. Last time the people interest comes first but now money interest comes first. In this case the people got no say even after various religious leader rejected the idea, news still come out about 'casino' 'casino'. Well at least we know that part of the cement or brick used to bulid the casino comes from our pocket.

The money shouldnt be coming from our pocket - it is investor' money.

The last known big project singapore has done is the singapore night safari .... but then alot of country has already started copying us .. thus there is not much attraction ...not to mention last night in the news ..about the incident about the jaguar escaping and injuring a foreigner has definitely created some negative impact on our reputation.

Not so sure about the job creation ... but then do you know that Mecau unemployment rate is zero

Btw, there is a big aquarium too .. heard it is going to be a big one housing 200+ species of marine life .... overheard that it is going to house a whale in there .....not sure what whale but with 5.5 billion bucks... better be a whale shark. :yeah:

Let See.

The tourist arrives in SG's Airport ( Hmm Airport Tax ).

Head for the taxi ( taxi driver smiling, since downtown and it's @ night ).

Check into Hotel ( Room are packed so need to pay extra ).

Feel hungry so head down to resataurent to fill up the stomatch. ( So crowded so wait, hmm good business hah ).

Shower and rush down to casio ...... ( how much he will contribute I don't know here). But at least Taxi or Bus will make money.

Loss/Win and suddenly he remember to buy present for ppl back home, So down to Orchard or similer palce to Shop ( So Shop Owner Happy ).

May be if he win, he might go to Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, Birdpark and theam park. Or might head down to movie.

From this picture, do you see there are cashflow ( economy ) driving. Whether he lost or he win is not discussing here. We are only seeing from the point of what Casio could bring.

Once Taxi Driver, Shop Owner, Restaurent Waiter/Owner has more income, than they will start spending. When they spent, economy more grow.

And so on and so on....

Life is like a peice of Uncured Live Rock [ from LFS ], you never know what you gonna get.........
