Here's my simple term of explanation:

To provide more overall and efficient filtration using either natural or artifical or combination of both filtration media such as macroalgae or bio balls, etc respectively.

a refugium can be integrated into the sump.

therefore..if u have a sump...it will be easier for you to have a refugium.

if you do not have a sump but wants a refugium...i suppose the cost of getting one is almost similar to getting a sump, ...which IMO, is much more worth it to upgrade to a sump for your tank.

The pic hippo post is a sump, of which designs of it can be widely seen ard the WWW. after u finalised on the design u want. The sump tank can be make to measure at some local glassmakers.

but its made to look like a sump with the skimmer in there?

a refugium is nothing more than a refuge from predation. inverts and other delicate species need a place to call their own Isolated, but connected to the main display tank, the refugium allows for common water filtration while at the same time keep the more aggressive fishes from impacting it.

Thus if u incorporate a skimmer and other forms of filtration...it becomes more of a sump than a refugium.
