centipede in LR

Recommended Posts

I am new to marine fish. Recently setup a 2 ft tank w/o corals. LR and LS only. Bot LR from another forumers. 2 of my fishes died recently and I thought this was due to stress till one night, I saw a 6 cm cetipede crawling out of the holes in the LR. Could it be this centipede that kills my LS? how to remove this centipede?

those are bristleworms. for me, i once threw away the rocks, too pissed to catch them. or, take the whole rock out, put them into a super high salinity water, den it will swim out. if not, use fresh water.(any side effects i wont be liable.) And one more thing, it shld have died off during the cycle stage, when ammonia is high. did u cycle ur tank?

Everything's sold. Back in 2yrs time.

i believe it is a bristleworm. they r scavengers and good sand sifters....

Yo,welcome on board!

Regarding the centipede, i think it's called Bristleworm. Should not posse a thread to your lifestock, they may damage Corals but i dun think fishes are affected by them. THey have beneficial effects to the sand-bed as well. If yours is a FOWLR tank, you may wanna get some worm eating fishes to finish it off. If not, find it's lair and use a chopstick. (that's what i did)

As for the fish dying, i think more details on water parameters and etc will help :D

bristleworms can harm your fish they can rub on them and the britstles can get into their flesh. if you have had one in your hand you know how annoying it is so imagine what it is like for a fish so small. it can possibly damage the mucous protection of the fish. when getting them out if you break it it will grow again. they are a nusiance to fish and reefers.

i did cycle the tank for 2 weeks and during that time, alot of other worms died but somehow this one survived. I get conflicting views, some say it will not harm LS, some say will?

another stoopid question on LR. I kept some excess LR in a seperate pail of salt water for more than 2 weeks w/o any air pump. Is the rock still alive? or is it considered dead?

No bro,

there maybe die-offs within the rocks, but it still have bacteria in it... so not considered dead rock! :P
