SRC Member killfire Posted September 6, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted September 6, 2003 You can DIY a 2 x 36W PL for less than $50. Get the e-ballast and tubes from Orgas. You can buy 4' aluminum reflectors from Guan Seng Electrical Service Co. No.283, Kranji Rd, s(739515) tel: 62699453 The reflector can be cut to size and mounted on aircon trunking or an aquarium hood. Hook up is simple. mains to e-ballast, e-ballast to tubes. But pls get help if you are uncertain. dealing with electricity which can kill.....
SRC Member piero Posted September 6, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted September 6, 2003 Better check the color temperature of those PL U buy. I rem that those he is selling is daylight which is 6000 or 6500K. A bit yellowish in my IMO, good for refugium but for corals wise... Try to look for 22000K to balance off the 6500K if you are buying that.

"Actually, the higher Kelvin temps may be more for display than practicality. Although sunlight is progressively filtered with increasing depth in ocean water, 6,500K lights are still a no-nonsense approach to providing a reef system with an appropriate source of light. Even so, 10,000K lamps seem to have a more aesthetic appeal to them. Not too blue, not too yellow." ~ Extract from an article by CR Brightwell-Marine Scientist. The full article was pinned up by AT in General ReefKeeping forum. Read it if you want more info on lighting.. I illuminated my tank with 6,500K PLLs (after reading the article).. They do have a slight tinge of yellow but with the actinic on as well, the yellow is not really noticable.
