If a man could beat his own fantasy. Then to only breed in captivity. Then its pointless.

Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

hey is it possible having cleaner shrimps wishark n sohal tang?

nope not possible, the shark will eat up the cleaner shimps. Its best if its in a stand alone tank or maybe with other aggressive fishes.

hi everyone, i kept a bamboo shark for a year plus with my ex gf before we broke up and i researched quite alot prior to it so just some things that i hope might help you guys in setting up your shark systems ya.

1) length of the tank is more important than height. sharks, especially the banded bamboo shark hardly utilise swimming areas far above the sandbed. a long, say five feet tank if possible, at just one foot would be better than a three feet long tank with two feet height.

2) the corners of the tank, ideally, should be rounded. this is recommended for all shark systems as it creates an illusion of infinite space. if there are sharp corners, the sharks will often, in frustration, swim in agitated fashion and slam their noses against the glass walls, leading to bruised noses.

3) try slicing up a piece of sotong or cuttlefish into thin strips and feed your shark by holding this strip of squid in front of it. it will swim and eat it from your hand without harming you in any way and will learn to seek your hand in future feedings. squids make a good food, as do scallops though scallops damn ex. also if feeding prawns, feed with the shell as sharks require the calcium for their cartilage and iodine and iron too. a good live food treat would be the juvenile marine tiger prawns sold at fishing tackle shops. you can keep them in your sump on pellets or flakes and leave a couple in the tank when youre away to amuse the shark.

4) you can keep the faster swimming schooling fishes such as chromis and damsels. damsels are better as theyre very agressive, and their schooling behaviour will be more pronounced in the presence of the shark.

5) you can collect hermits at places like west coast or changi beach and place them in your tank for your shark to find. they benefit from eating more crustaceans and shell matter.

5) i think the bamboo sharks are pretty cool, so best wishes to those keeping bamboo sharks ya!

cheers,

ian

ps: i hatched that bamboo from an egg case by performing a caesearian type cutting of the egg case, and it did fine though i think it was blind for two days after coming out. you can judge the growth of the shark by shining a lamp on the egg case. if it doesnt come out after its filled most of the case, its a good option to cut it out as sometimes the conditions for hatching are not present in captive tanks and they somtimes dont decide to hatch, so you can help it.

ps: i hatched

hey jazz. i dont have any personal experience with rays other than occasionally landing one on a hook. hahah. ill tell you what i know though ya.

primarily, they need fine and large sandbeds. coarse sand and sharp rocks will cause abrasion of their underside.

as with the bamboo shark example, an ideal food would be live bait prawns from fishing tackle shops. you can also bury a few chopped pieces of shrimp or squid or fish under the substrate for it to find. they are generally hardy and do ok with other non-bottom dwelling fish like gobies or dragonets as it'll eat anything that moves on the sandbed.

last thing, it is important to feed them iodine or iodide rich foods if not rays will develop goiter. this applies also for the bamboo shark and all cartilaginous fish. feed foods with their shells- crab with shells, prawns with shells. im not sure if you can soak the foods or inject them with a bit of the iodide supplements we use for dosing our tanks, but i think that makes sense. you think?

cheers,

ian
