SRC Member Cardinal Tetra Posted March 20, 2005 Author SRC Member Share Posted March 20, 2005 From the picture attached, is the final design of my sump filtration system. Due to a tight budget, I'm going to DIY an overflow box concept using PVC pipes. The tank will have 2 overflow boxes, one from the main tank to the sump, another from the refugium to the return pump tank.
SRC Member Cardinal Tetra Posted March 20, 2005 Author SRC Member Share Posted March 20, 2005 Please guys, I would appreciate any feedback from the concept I have designed. There may be some loopholes which I may have not noticed.
SRC Member shoelevy Posted March 20, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted March 20, 2005 why don't you just use one sump with 3 compartments with the middle compartment designed for refugium?
bloodlamb
hi, Maybe you want to add one compartment for the skimmer/skimmer pump where water level is constant so that it is easier to tune? My tank maker did not do that and wanted me to put the pump in the last compartment of the sump where water level changes. Force me to improvise a bit. Since I have 2 empty tanks standing by and a tight budget forced me to DIY a sump in this manner.
SRC Member shoelevy Posted March 20, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted March 20, 2005 i see i don't know much about this system so i can't say much after looking at your drawing, i would only like to pt out to you to think hard about the part which i circled because to my knowledge, in order for equilibrium to be acheived, the water level in the refug has to be higher than to the tank on the right to create a pressure difference to force water to flow the diff in height is related to the flow of your return pump...directly proportional if i'm not mistaken do consider this pt carefully hope i've been helpful and not been mistaken
SRC Member LaW Posted March 20, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted March 20, 2005 agree with shoelevy. do consider it carefully. and i always the like the idea of seperating the refugium away from equipments(sump). Quote If a man could beat his own fantasy. Then to only breed in captivity. Then its pointless. I was lazy to draw another overflow box so I just drew a pipe to indicate that its connected and labelled overflow box (pipes).
sslow
Few points from a novice. Doing some research cos I am thinking of getting a bigger tank with a sump too. 1. Read from melev website and also from reefkeeping regarding that it may not be a good idea to have the skimmer after the fuge. Better to have skimmer than fuge. Best to have seperate sources too (1 for fuge and another for skimmer). 2. Did you plan for a bubble trap after you skimmer? 3. Have a plan to isolate your fuge without having to shutdown your entire sump. Just in case, macro turns asexual (or sexual, not sure which but knows it is bad for the tank), you can bypass the fuge and still have skimmer running. Just my 2 cents. Will experts out there further some comments? Trying to determine what is a good setup too.
