yes and no.

to tell u first this is wat i have read , my tank is still being set up and im a noob too.

YES.

good as a extra filter to remove nutrients.

cheap ranging from 10 to 1000++ dollars

maybe lesser maintenance.

need only a sump and skimmer will do.

NO.

i have seen tanks without skimmer and doing fine too!

those tanks are using DSB and sump

mayb more on maintenance.

said to have remove good nutrients too.

Conclusion

IMO doesnt really matter once ur tank had mature.

anyway its up to individual

and im going to try skimmerless

however i have a BIG refugium with DSB in it and main tank

PLUS BIG SUMP PLUS plenum system.

In my refuge im growing plants to suck up nutrients.

so i think tt will render my skimmer useless.

might as well spend the cash on other stuff.

correct me if im wrong.

it's a must unless u r using a large n good refuguim...

otherwise u must prepare to change water every week 10-20%...

Another major advantage of skimmer is that it can remove harmful substances on top of waste e.g. H2S...

Maintains oxygen level and to some extent, pH as well :)

now u tik necessary or not?

hehe..

anyway skimmer does skim not only nutrients n also broken down

organic components from the water. so I usually off my skimmer

when I drip mineral traces n planktons.

nutrients is = good

neber hear bad nutrients??

as for jazzben81, suck up nutrients?

wonder wat's your corals going to eat..?

skimmer suppose will skim off those

break down organic + food waste.

maybe u like to read some FAQ or loan a book. :)
