Any Better Canister Filter to recommend ?

My current setup as shown:

Problems:

Consistently high NO3 ... 40-50 ppm

Uncontrol dark brown/green hair algae every few days if not cleaned

Questions:

1. Any recommendation to replace my existing Atman External canister filter to a more powerful one > 1500l/hr (so I can optimse my flowrate to the Resun 650 chiller)and acting like a 'sump'. Not considering to add any 'sump' because of space constraint.

2. Any benefit to replace to T5 (2ft only) from my existing PL.

Thanks.

a higher flow filter does help in the chiller area but make sure its within the acceptable level. I suppose common figure are around 1200LPH.

Even you choose a expensive Ehiem canister will not bring down your NO3 cause canister are known to be nitrate factory. careful nutrient input(feeding) and regular water change is your only option.

If migrating to a sump system is not available, then you can hook up a sealed denitrator column powered by very low flow motor. A higher model would be using sulphar, though the cost incurred may be better off using sump system.

Not sure how much space you have for the next canister. What I did before was to run 2 canisters in series. Pros are more water volume and easier maintenance. I can by-pass one of them and clean it while the other one is still running.

Tried Ehiem and Hydor. Both are good but hydor is not as costly.

As for PL vs T5. Personally like T5 better as I think there are more choices of tubes (brands and temperature).

Good luck.

I used to have the same problem with diatoms, nuisance aglae, etc. Spend lots of $$$ on ROWA, AquaPhos. Cannot keep up on the expense of the removers every fortnight. As a last resort, I bought a denitrator. That was 3 mths ago. Till today, I've not bought a single pack of ROWA. You should look into this option.

You can try the high end Ehiem wet-dry canister filter.

I've seen reefers using it with great results.

Thanks for all the replies.

Will be interested to look into the Ehiem 2227/2229 Wet/Dry Filter.

The other important point is that this Filter 'OUT' will go into my CL650

chiller 'IN' and hence the pump o/p should preferably > 1500l/h.

Will look around for a 'used' one here or maybe get a new one.

Perhaps you should use a seperate pumo for the chiller? ;)

From what i roughly know the output from the wet-dry canister filter is not constant. It varies AKA pulsing.

A seperate pump also helps by increasing the internal circulation===> reducing 1 -2 wave makers
