Upgrading To New Tank

Hi all,

I'm gonna upgrade my 2ft x 1ft x 1.5ft tank to a 2.5ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft x10mm OR a 3ft x 2ft x 1.5ft x10mm tank. Wanna do a IOS with sump below. Would like to know the dimension of IOS and location of the IOS(either corners or centre?).

How many holes must be drilled, 2 (1 in, 1 out) or 3 (1 in, 2 out) ? Size of hole?

Thank you

I would advice you get a tank with 24in height and do a DSB (4-6in). And if you leave water level 1-2in below tank top, then you get about 18-20 water height which I think is nice for reef tank.

Number of holes I think up to you. For my 3 ft tank, I use 1in flow out to sump and 3/4in return from sump.

Thanks panlee. I will not be putting a DSB on my main tank, therefore I don't think a 24" high tanks is needed. I'll be having my DSB with macroaglae in my sump.

Need more tips, keep them pouring in.

Thanks

if u have a small sump and intent to have a DSB, it will not be effective.....DSB need a very large area to progress.....unless u have a large sump!! :D

for my case.

tank size 36"x24"x24" 2 hole(1 in, 1 out )

1" flow out ( hole should be more than 1" for pipe thickness about 1.5" ,depend your conector size )

1/2 " return (actual size >1/2 " as above mentioned )

as dr evil san mentioned more bigger surface r better , ;)

but personaly not prefer DSB for FOT main tank due to big fish may cause DSB problems :D DSB for RT should be better :D

i would like to suggest u keep 2' high . the view r big diferent compare to 1.5' high.

u can try to visit any 2' high tank u will feel that like 21" TV compare to 29" TV :D

2 ' hight r much much better view :P

ps: but of'coz if for RT u need to consider your lighting system can support for the 2' high or not

dr evil & bicolor, thanks for the tip.

I'm thinking for having a sump which is similar concept of ML display tank. My idea of my sump is as such.

24" X 12" x 12". Vol of DSB will be abt 12"(L) x 12"(W) x 5"(H). Grow macroaglae on top of DSB. Have the sump lighted up 24/7 for the macroaglae.

Might be thinking of using mixture of aragonite( sugarsized) & coral sand(which I buy from LFS) for the DSB.
