live rock monsters

Recommended Posts

recently noticed a small red worm like creature ( mantis shrimp? ) hiding inside my live rock.. maybe that explains y my fishes go missing.. small crabs ar also disturbing my fishes with their claws ourside n body inside the holes in the live rock. i dunno what other monsters there are in my live rock now..!!

thinking of taking out my rocks n put them in boiling water to rid of all monsters... however the rocks will be dead.. will they be alive again if i were to cycle them again..?

btw, tried using traps to trap these monsters but no success.. :(

any suggestions..?

alrite... those red worms? hmmm... is it those hairy type? those can sting man, and it gonna hurt ur finger. if its those hair worm u are talking about, then its bristle worm. for these worms, i dun have any experince with these worms harming my fish. but from wat i read, these worms can kill fish. But these are very slow creatures... so dun worry too much on it

for crabs, how big is ur crabs? small tiny crabs are harmless to ur fish. but when they grow larger, it might post a threat to ur LS.

for mantis shrimp(stomatopod), do a research on how it look like.

do u hear cracking sounds out from ur tank? "clap!" "clap!" "clap" ?

if so, it might be possible that mantis shrimp is hidden in ur rocks. and it hunts for ur LS, snail, fish, crab, shrimp.

do a search on stomatopod on the link below.

the same shrimp that will produce the same sound its actually pistol shrimp. again, search the google and see how they look like. i didnt have any experince with this type of shrimp. so do do a search on the google.

for as the LR, of course when u boil it, it will be dead rocks. however if u allow it to cycle and providing optimun suitable condition again, it will be "resurrected".

and of course, u can DIY a trap for these pests. the result might not be instantaneous, it will need some time.

check out the link below for some ideas.

well... hope my info and experince helps u in a bit.

good luck and cheers,

If a man could beat his own fantasy. Then to only breed in captivity. Then its pointless.

Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

I read somewhere that you could dip your LR into salt water with salinty of 1.040 for a minutes to two, which will force all pests within the live rock to scramble out of the rock, then you could take your leisure to select those critters that you want or pour aways those you don't want.

I have tried it on a LR and manged to get rid of a brittle worm, two crabs and a brittle star.

One point to note, all your alage on the LR will turn white (die off) if you dip in the water for too long.

Try dipping the LR in high salinity water (got LR from fellow reefer) but nothing found. On constant llookout during cycling and manage to detect a worm like creature (sorry lah new to the hobby, dun kno wat tt). Remove the LR and dip in tap water....hee hee :D:D more effective in geeting the worm out...wonder will my LR recover <_<
