dunno this method can anot.......

drills alot of holes on the surface of the pipe and on top the end use a end cap to cover the top, so tat water can flow into the small holes instead the big oppening...

then drill a smaller hole on the end cap so as to let the minimum air goin thru, thus reducing noise .............

try out see can work anot, just a suggestion only havent try out b4

good luck joe :D .

Hitchhiking on this thread.

I have a similar problem of the sound of "niagara falls" in my overflow compartment. Didn't think out the design when started out (inexperience), so my overflow compartment doesn't come with a stand pipe. It used to be filled will bioballs but have removed the nitrate factory. As a result, its almost a 2' drop for the water entering the overflow compartment. It seems difficult to add a stand pipe now that everything is running and not forgetting that the return pipe is also in the overflow compartment making it having limited space to work around to install a stand pipe. So how can I reduce the noise?

Thinking of adding small pieces of live rock inside so that it will break the fall of the water. And LRs suppose to be better at containing denitrifying bacteria. Think it will work??

Jerry

I have eggcrate and wool at the top of the overflow but below that is still an almost 2' drop. I suppose putting wool near the bottom of the overflow will help reduce the noise but too much wool is also a nitrate factory isn't it? And getting the wool out from the bottom of a 2' depth overflow copartment to wash every week is not an easy maintainence (the ones at the top is easy).

1. put bioball inside ..

2. put 2 layer of cotton wool on top of the bioball to reduce the waste + more even water going down. Change the wool every 2 weeks. The wet cotton wool also help to reduce the water falling noise.

3. Install a ball valve in the sump , close a little bit so to slow down the water from overflow -> sump.

My tank used to setup as the above method until I install a durso pipe ...

wat is the sound like .. ?? is it a strong ###### sound .. or gulpping sound .. ??

if it is strong ###### sound.. that mean the pipe have difficulty "breathing"...

try inserting an air tube in the middle of the pipe to help it suck air... then the water flow might improve also as the flow will be less turbulent.

give it a try ..
