Do NOT get digital zoom.. might as well just photoshop resize...

Your decision on a P&S cam also depends on how much control u want with the camera. Generally speaking Canon cameras are pretty decent because of their rather accurate white balancing, the canon A series comes to mind for manual control, the ixus for style...

But then again, I've used my gf's olympus mui 400 and the pictures turned out fine at 4R....

optical zoom uses the lens to magnify the image. such is the technology used in telescopes and binoculars.. rendering sharp images even though the objects are far away.

digital zoom basically is like enlarging a photo using paint. try to enlarge some photos and u will find the quality deteriorates.

If you talking abt macro reef then maybe even the ability to mount on an external flash and adapting on a macro lens or close up filter would come to mind... Still the canon A series comes to mind..

But if you are like me who are picky abt the design of products, I don't like the look for the canon A series...

go to a place like...MS Colour or Alan Photo, although Alan Photo may be a bit hard if you go at specific times.

try out all their cameras that are within your said budget.

see which one fits your hand the most. it's important that the camera, though a performer, should fit your shapes egronomically. like me. the reason why I pass over smaller cameras is because they seem to dwarf in comparisson to my hands.

play with them. note down the model, come back home and go online for some research.

that's what I normally do lah, although I prefer playing around with cameras at places like Cathay Photo, as the people there are much more knowledgeable *in my personal and very humble but biased opinion, lah.*

Oh.. hm.. usually females (don't mean to be sexist or anything here, it's just a trend I noticed) will prefer to get one that's small and handy... maybe even brainless... so best is she go down and see what she likes..

As it is most digicams nowadays are almost on par with one another in terms of image quality.. and without close scrutiny u can hardly tell...

Lumix FX-7 uses Leica lens. Can get around $685. But the battery life a bit short. I heard the Casio one has much longer battery life.
