i believe he mod the impeller into something like needlewheel.

Some people mod their impeller by drilling tiny hole on the blade of the impeller and secure fishing line thru each hole thus enabling the impeller to chop up the air bubble better.

He may be using small stick instead of fishing line or bioball.
