Bioball and bioring usefulness is very subjective..... People will tell u that it is nitrate factory stuffs.... and against it so it is up to you to research and find the answer yourself.

IMHO, i think it would be better not to add biorings or bioballs. They are required in freshwater setups because in freshwater tanks need them to cutivate the benefical bacteria. Moreover, freshwater fishes are more tolerant of nitrates.

However in marine setup, the LRs would made up good sources of bacteria cultivation liao. The biorings and bioballs would trap detris and becomes "nitrate factory". It will be difficult to keep the nitrate levels low then.

I gathered all this info from this forum last time. Hope it would be useful to you. :D

My marine tank is 9 month old now. I started the hobby using bioballs and coral chips. Now can i get rid of them and replace with LR. I am trying to bring my NO3 down, they are high. I am using an internal overflow for my 3 feet tank.

Remove them bit by bit over a few weeks. Too drastic a reduction will remove too much of the aerobic bacteria from your system. Small reduction will only destroy a little of your aerobic bacteria in your bio balls and allow time for new bacteria to colonise your LR.
