Qns on Overflow pipe and return pump

Recommended Posts

Hi all , recently installed a overflow pipe , and a 20HF Rio pump to my 2.5ft by 18inch by 18inch .Seems like the overflow pipe cannot handle high flow , the main tank gets filled up too quickly and the sump tank drys up .

What I did to the overflow pipe is i attached 2 unions , 1 ball valve to it . Any idea whether this is e cause of the slow overflow to the sump or anyone knows if the Overflow Pipe is not suitable to handle high flow rates? ( Bought my pipe from J***h)

My current configuration now is that I teed off the return , one back straight to the main tank , one to the chiller and back to main tank , one back to sump to control flow rate. Basically to prevent the water level in the main tank to go above the tooth of the overflow pipe , i turn on full blast of the ball valve , allowing significant flow into the sump again..

Any suggestion? Will removing the unions and attaching a hose and a ball valve improve the flow to the sump ? :erm:

Not sure what overflow pipe u r using. Anyway, union n valve should leave it and should not affect anything, but valve should be opened wide. Install a valve along the return pump to tank to control the flow. Adjust it till the out flow is slight faster than the return. The chiller is always recommended to use a separate pump instead of tee.

Alternatively, if space allow, parallel another overflow pipe, but the valve along the return is always good for the fine tuning. Unless, u pump is not that powerful enough to dry the sump.

Just share share experience.

Cheers!
