How many fish for 55gal

How many 3-6 inch fish could I put in a 55 gallon SW tank?

Could you be more specific about what kind of fish you are looking for. If you ask me, not many fish of that size will fit in a 55gal. It depends on the behavior of the fish and how big it will eventually grow.

Small fishes - clowns, damsels, firefishes, gobies would be fine.

Fishes which grow big fast and requires room... like tangs and angels, are bad choices.

I was thinking in the lines of what Achilles Tang suggested.

But how many total could I put in the tank? I figured about 6 to 10 fish.

Another question I have is:

Does having live rock in the tank constitute a reef tank?

Reef tanks are tanks with corals. LR in Fish-only tanks are called "Fish-only with Live rock" (FOWLR).

6 is a good number for a FOWLR

I have 2 clowns and a tang in 75gal 4 foot. I consider that optimum.

i think only a few months old only.... btw, itis better to keep a lower bioload in a tank..... some "tang police" keep only 1 tang in 100 gallon tank... can you believe that??

Reef Central is huge! They have at least 100 times more people visiting them then here. Only Singaporeans and perhaps Malaysian visit this board. I don't say much there but just read.

BTW, we should also factor in invertebrates as bioload for tanks..... though they are thought as low bio load reef animals esp when a reef tank is opted for other than a FOWLR.....

ahahaha...

actually some invertebrates bioload is really very high and maybe we cannot see them as their waste is usually in liquid form.

i do quite often see my snails release chalky stuffs into the water.

usually i get advise that 2feet tank can only keep max of 4 fishes but right now i have 7 small fishes in a 2feet tank with lots of other shrimps and plant but of course with more hardwork, change water every week la.

i think there is not fix rule to such a question, it's the case for marine tank, also the case for fresh water water. if you want to keep more fishes be prepare to spend more tank changing water. of course no matter how hardworking you are, there is sure a max max for the bioload.
