how far must the distance be from the water level to the MH sitting on the hood?

keep it at least 8" away from the water level.

i kept mine 10" away from it. too low and its a bother when u want to do something to the tank, and its damn freaking hot too!

Usually ppl place them a safe dist anywhere from 6" to 8".

This is so to prevent water splashes from touching the bulb... else yr bulb will explode and be demaged

Placing the bulb too high will cause the MH to lose it's penatration effect. Then it's quite useless U'll be lighing up your house instead of the tank....

If you're using a DE bulb with the UV glass, remember to do weekly / monthly cleaning to keep the glass as clean as possible to get the most from the bulb... cos a dirty glass will block light duh

I have an Arcadia and keep it 6 inches off the water. Tank is brighter with less spillage out of the tank..
