SPS with T5

i plan to try SPS system but i still confuse about MH and Chiller because they are too expensive to me and i want try Aquaz T5, ho do you think about it ? can i use it ? my size tank is 200 x 70 x70 how many tube i must install on it ?

Im not sure about T5s...

but ive seen many reefers using T5s for SPS.

you might wanna check with Dr Evil or HV for the combination,

T5 might not be enough to bring out the full glory of your SPS. I downgraded from MH to T5, while the SPS still has its colors it seems less intesnse then before....

but i think with careful selection and good scaping, you might produce some very impressive tank.....look at Danano tank....he is using T5 and his SPS are very impressive....

PS: T5 will also heat up your tank though not as much as MH...

If you are using many tubes of t5.. IMo not much diff from the heat MH produce.. stilly u would need a chiller

Actually both have their plus points --some reefers uses a combination of MH and T5, like MH 10k + T5 Blue supplement.... -Jim

T5 can play with colors and kelvin easily. Running cost may not be lower than MH.

Important factors to consider when deciding;

1) Depth of ur tank. If >2ft, better use MH.

2) Space or budget $$ to acquire chiller? Note the cost to run a chiller also.

I myself is using 6 tubes of T5 for my <1ft deep tank. Using 2 Ac fan to cool. Manage to maintain 25 - <29 degree. During the cool season (like yr end), I switch off one of the fan. Disadvantage is top up is pretty high, ~ 4 litres per day.

MH will give you the colour and growth that T5 can't.

T5 has to be used in quantity to achieve the kind of PAR values that MH have. Plus they do not have the UV levels that scientists/reefers are speculating that the coloured pigments that SPS have to protect against high levels of UV.

That said, you can keep SPS under T5s. Get good quality ones.

thx for replies, for this moment i decide to plan buy 2x XM MH 250W 20.000K for my 200x70x70cm tank. i know this is insufficient for my tank but i think i will put my acro at exactly under my MH and non discoverable by MH i will put soft coral, if i use 20K K, do i don't need atinic tube FL ?

maybe i will use DIY chiller, because temperature at my city between 28-30 celcius, i heard the acropora can't life at this temperatur. so even if i use T5 that not heat my tank, the temperature is not good for acro...

how do you think ?

I find 20kk too blue and growth of SPS will be too slow....

maybe can consider go for 10KK and supplement with T5 actinic to balance the yellow effect.

SPS can survive at 28 - 29C but for long term health, a comfortable 25C would be best. Some reefers keep SPS around 27 - 28C long term, you can accelerated growth due to higher metabolism but you will also play with fire because they are on the threshold of stress... and everyone knows how quickly SPS corals go over the edge once something goes wrong with the water....

i'm living at jogjakarta city, indonesia, and i can take acropora from sea at my city with very cheap price, because of that i want try SPS tank.

So, if i want install 2 MH, i must get 10 K x 2 and 2 x artinic T5 HO, can i use aquaz T5

i heard the slimmer/glitter effect of MH can use by corals ?

Yup, at my city you can put your acropora as much as you like at you 1000L tank for just S$=10. i can order direct acro from local fisherman. is that cheap ? and you just order what the colour you wishes....

Hmmm, I strongly suggest you start off with easier to keep corals like LPS first. Build up your husbandry skills and knowledge, get the right equipment in place like good lighting, good skimming, calcium reactor, water movement devices etc first... SPS can be quite demanding and I think you want to see good strong and nice colours from SPS and not dark brown ones.

Your government is trying to protect your beautiful reefs so you may want to conserve the natural beauty God has given your country by supporting LFS that may have followed the harvesting quotas and not by paying local fisherman to hack up the reefs improperly.

Colorful corals or not, if they do not know how to handle them, you'll have nice white skeletons to display at your home!

Anyway, my point is... if you really insist on moving straight to SPS before even trying to keep softies or LPS, start off with frags first. If you can keep them well, move on to bigger colonies.

No point to fill up a tank with nice colourful SPS colonies and have them perish or turn brown within a few days or weeks, no matter how cheap you can get them.

yup you're right, for 1 year i had try to keep bubble coral, hammer & others softies and i use direct sun light for my tank light and FL NO. i don't want to keep it full my tank (even it's so cheap here) i want keep it life for long term.

and you're right my goverment make some effort to keep it form wild harvest, acro one of them. and i think my LFS is buy from local fisherman too....

and for 1 year i had learn how to setup, using the right equipment from protein skimmer, calcium reaktor, lighting, water parameter, size of sump, refugium, addictive, wave, food, DSB, denitrate, etc. and maybe 6 month again i want to try SPS, so i have to learn from now about SPS. i hope i don't make God angry...... for not keep them right
