MD55 VS RIO20HF fighting for a place in my 3x2x2

hi fellow reefers, i need some help for my tank.

currently the 3ft is already cycling...with a 1260 from  typorobin

DSB of around 5-6" jus beneath rockscape with plenum setup (i know its silly to start another DSB amidst the recent debate of its dubious effectiveness, but i believe with proper execution it should live up to its name and history)

tank well achieving 80% uncovered to utilize full effectiveness of DSB(hopefully)

with the use of acrylics stacked above DSB...

After 3 weeks the nitrates level are coming down substantially hence will add livestocks as in realli SPS, fish, and inverts...planning for 90% SPS anyway..

however, i wish to upgrade my volume turnover of more than 10 times...

thus i attached this pic and seek opinions of pros and greens alike for advise...

i have done some initial comparison of MD55 and rioHF

MD55 : rio20HF

cost to me: ard $100 : reachin $100 as well

$ consumption $13 mnthly : maybe $6

features pressure rated : alarmingly great performance

turnover rate may get 11 : may hit 13-15

thus, in seek of my best choice for a resident pump for my SPS tank...

which should i sought after ????

Thnks a lot to any advise or help.. in advance...

Sorry I dont get the diagram

The 2 X25mm holes are drilled at the top of the sump? Then when your main return shuts down, the excess water from the overflow will spill into the sump, creating a spill. Suggest you place the drilled bulkheads at the bottom, coupled wiht ball valves so you can shut down and repair. replace pump without emptying the whole sump.

rio is not pressure rate...so after head pressure...the turn over rate might hit 10 or 9 times....but it takes significantly lower power consumtion as compared to MD55...and if i am not wrong, the heat produced is also lesser...it is in sump and has a small foot print...IMO...rio would be a better choice...

just my 2 cents :peace::peace:

:thanks: decentkid bro...

how about the 2x25mm ??

do you think it will be able to drain return water back to the sump effectively ???

hi bro riot,

the 2x25mm will be drilled at the top most area of the main tank...

so whatever water is returned will be skimmed off at the top of the water surface

and back into the sump again....

anyway, i have 1 vote for rio20hf..

External pump will always introduce lesser heat compare to in-sump pump unless it is special low heat pump like red dragon.

hi bro weileong...

would the heat not be too much of an issue because im planning to borrow some efforts of a CL650...

DSB is proven a good system for NNR. It's not dubious except for a few vocal critics.

U don't have to fear anything about it.

oh, to add again...

the 4x1x1 sump has about 65% plenum and DSB as well...

im trying to achieve a bulletproof SPS tank ... heheheh

ofkos i will try to master all the essential husbandry skills, techniques, effort and passion in order to hit a vullet proof tank...

hey boss, have you thought about the proposal already?

current sunk costs minus depreciation are as follows:

main tank 3x2x2 8mm: free

4x1x1 FGT sump: free

1260: $80.00

around 60kg livesand: free from garan and supremo

250w MH 6500k: $80.00

40kg LRs: arnd $120

near future:

CR & skimmer: setting budget of arnd 1k

CL650: arnd $300

2x39w 1atnic 1 10000k: DIY so maybe around $60

SPS fish and inverts: setting aside $400

total should hit no more than $2000.00

unless some gems come along, (which i must say is almost an unavoidable phenomenon) should hit above 2K liao... Oh my gosh...

Hmmm..very hard to keep within your $400 budget for SPS tank...the most you can have 8 colonies... :P

Not enough to fill a 3ft tank lar....

IMO, better to have 2 x actinics 39watts to balance out the yellowish color of your 6500k bulb..

True....but once into SPS the damage has already been done...... :P

Cos its an endless pit....

well said...

though adversarial, but the wonders and the plentiful of joy jus watching the tank and inhabitants outweigh the rest...

:thanks: SRC..
