Water Temp & Chiller Advice Needed

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have set up a FOWLR marine tank and left it to mature for 4 weeks.

Yesterday, I bought a digital thermometer and placed in my marine tank.

The temperature recorded is between 30 to 30.5 deg C.

Is the water temp. too high for clownfishes, basslets and damsels?

I also uses the hydrometer to test the SG of my tank water.

I understand that most hydrometers are made to test SG at 25 dec C.

Since my tank temp is around 30 deg C, what should the corresponding SG if I want the SG to be at 1.021?

I am considering a chiller if 30 deg C is deemed to hot for comfort.

Can anyone recommend the smallest/most compact chiller, its brand, price and where to buy it?

Can anyone recommend any shop which sells good quality percula clownfishes? I was at AquaStar (Yishun) and was disappointed as the fishes were unhealthy?

Actually, my order of adding fish would be clownfishes first, followed by basslets then damsel fishes last but if I cannot find nice clownfishes I will buy the basslets first. Would there any problem adding the clownfishes later?

Also does anyone know where can I find juvenile or nice royal gramma and flash-back gramma?

I also noticed a bivalve moving around my live rocks in the middle of the night.

Is there a need to feed it or will it survive?

Thanks very much.

Felix

Ha, ha, me too only 2 months experience, but r pumped by Masters here.

If u only keep fish, then 30 degree is sure alright, hence chiller is not a must. My temp exceed 32, and they still behave the same and eat well. For fish only, perhaps, u only need to concentrate on their health and the water quality. If water really get too hot in those very hot days, just off the lights, and they will still very happy.

What hydrometer did u use? I'm using the Coralife deep six. Seems not very sensitive to temp. Also, if fish only the SG range can also be quite wide too. So, dun worry. Just talk to your fishes everyday, if they r happy, then it's ok.

Cheers!

You can get from our sponsers here. The chiller size depends on how big is ur tank. think u can go for resun as its quite cheap compare to other brands.

Thank you Cheese & Nicken for responding.

Who are our sponsors? Do they offer cheaper price for chillers or offer 2nd hand chillers?

The lighting I used is just 2 tubes - 1 daylight and 1 blue light.

The main source of heat comes from the external canister filter (brand: Jebao).

Thanks on the advice on Basslets but I've been having difficulty getting decent clownfishes (which I planned to add 1st to my tank). Looks like I may start with Basslet then clownfishes.

I saw some live rocks with grasses on them and I love those grasses. 1 of my live rocks have just a little on it. How do I encourage the grass to grow?

Where can I buy green macro-algae or "grass" to grow in my tank?

Thanks.

If you go to the main forum menu, just scroll down and you will be able to see our forum sponsors. Some of them carries chillers of different brands, seldom you get to see them selling a 2nd hand chiller.

if you are into FOWLR, then your lighting is sufficient, if you want to go into reef, then i'd suggest you upgrade to T5 or MH.

The main source of heat comes from the external canister filter (brand: Jebao).

External canister filter or pump will not be a heat source to the tank, as no heat is transfered from the canister/pump because theres no direct contact with the water.

Basslets are very agresive and territorial fish, make sure you do not regret afterwards, its almost impossible to ctach them without removing all your rock works.

Those grasses are also macro algae, you can get them at most LFS, or you can try Coral Farm which have a constant supply of them. The macro algae most reefers are looking for but very rare is the Chaetomorpha, you can either get the caulerpa but its a rather high maintenance algae. most macroalgae needs 24/7 lightings to prevent it from turning assexual.

Thanks.

Where exactly is Coral Farm in LCK?

Anyone has the address and tel no.?

Also does anyone has Oasis tel no. in Farmart?

If anyone knows of good marine LFS in North West area, please advise as I stay at Choa Chu Kang?

Regards.

Felix

Chua Chu Kang?!?!

Besides going to Farmart, you can go to LCK110 and Coral Farm.

Coral Farm is at Lim Chu Kang Lane 6 and LCK 110 is also in Lim Chu Kang but nearer to Neo Tiew - Sungei Buloh Wetlands reserves.

Coral Farms is famous for quality exotic fishes and tonga branches while LCK110 brings in wide arrays of LPS, Clams & SPS. ;)
