regarding reef-safe silicone

hi reefers, i read in some articles about reef-safe silicone. got the question. what will happen if a person does not use reef- safe silicone or silicone unsuitable for marine use?

all silicon used for holding glass together are the same in my knowledge.. unless u go for dow corning black silicon which is stronger but takes much longer to set. think companies come up with reef-safe silicon to mark up the price. silicon should always be kept dry while it is setting.
