Can the live sand in old tank use back in new tank

Hi, I'm upgrading soon. Wonder can I use back the old sand in my 2 ft tank to my new tank? Do I need to wash them? Please note that I'll need to transfer all my live rock and coral before I can transfer the sand.

Kindly advise.

yes u can.

but try not to put in corals b4 adding the sand. & dun pour all in one shot to minimise sand storm.

try to wait till the sandstorm is clear then add in the corals & livestocks.

suggest U transfer yr livestock to another holding tank temporary

- wash yr sand in the old salt water to prevent too much die off.

- lay old sand in new tank and rescape tll you're happy

- allow a wk or 2 before adding back live stock over a time period (Not all at once)

I don't have another holding tank . Most likely to hold all my coral at one side of the new tank and add in the old sand (after clean with tank water) bit by bit across a period of time or to discard them.

i transfered my 1ft cube's sand to my 2.5ft... but even with that little sand the detruis from the old sand was insane... clouded my whole take for almost 2 days...

My advice is to get holding tanks/pails, put all ur lifestock into them with all the essentials, bubbler, small light maybe... then transfer all your old livesand FIRST... why I say first, is because you don't want to pour dirty sand into an already filled tank...

what I think I did was to lay down some new sand, then some old sand, then some new sand... etc etc.. and then mixed them around then added new saltwater... then the rocks, then the livestock last... coz I din have much livestock to begin with from my 1ft cube... but for you maybe best to wait a while for the tank to settle...

I also ran filterfloss for the first part of the tank to trap all the floating detrius...

my own opinion lah...

sand do not cost much...

old sand may hav trapped detritus in them...

therefore, use new sand, then add few handfuls of ur old sand for faster cycling of tank...

bacteria mulitply veri fast one, dun worry (1 becomes 2, 2 becomes 4, 4 becomes 8, 1k becomes 1M...)

in this way, u hav a clean sandbed n faster cycled sand

Thank. Look like it is not advisable to use back the old sand. True , may start the tank with new sand only.

More advise needed:

- Do I need to wait for one month (for Bio-cycle) to transfer my life stock to the new tank. or can I start transfering one week after I added in the live rock. Will the live rock from new bought and existing 2ft tank (about 25kg) enough to support the bio-system with minimum live stock (original from current 2 ft tank) for the begininig?
