I am currently changing water every week / 2 weeks by buying 5 gallons of water from a LFS.

Is there a difference from this and mixing your own sea water? can one mix the both together?

Does sea water from LFS' contain higher nutrient levels?

:thanks:

Make up water, IMO is wat I prefer cos you know wat the hell is in the water thus ensuring a good water quality. Only set back is that needs circulation of the make up water for at least 4 hrs b4 changing tank water. Now sea salts are getting even better in nutrients than sea water... I'm using Topic Marin's Reef Pro, Calcuim and Magnesium are corally happy high!

For all that I know, some LFS sells so called sea water that are actually make up water using low grade sea salt...

hi 35Cents, u r talking abt a water company in Long Beach, California which supplies processed seawater to their respective customers. this is entirely different situation from buying SW from our local LFSs. at best SW from local LFSs wld hv gone thru simple processing and aeration, but i am quite sure our local LFSs dun hv the expertise and technology to go thru the complex filtration methods as what CatalinaWater did.

juz me 2 cents. :)

Hi LS, I understand wat u mean. Singapore don't sell such good quality SW in LFS. (seriously, I dun know any LFS that sells real SW. Quite a few I asked used red sea salt. :D )When I studying in London the LFS there really sells real sea water as in the catalina kind...another brand forgot wat name.. much like this product in gallon bottles. My reefer friends there swears by it but I prefer synthetic salt cos bloody expensive every week to change tank water! :) If my memory serves me well, it's something like £3.50 per US gallons. Good for nanos, but for a 5 footer....faint.. :D

what is the reason for areating / stirring mixed SW for at least 4hrs before it goes into the main tank?

To oxygenate the water and to let the salt competely dissolve into the water cos some elements takes a much longer time to dissolve...tat's wat I know... but I got read somewhere that it will prevent "burning" of fishes and corals...is that correct anyone?

Try seali**... their salt water are made from kent salt

If that the case, why not buy Kent marine salt and mix it yourself. I thought people choose to buy sea water from LFS is to 'seed' their newly setup tank.....

:) Greeting :)

Tank: 4' by 2' by 2' (CR antique)

Sump: 3' include 1' refuigm
