I have a similar tank and are using UV-C 9W Sterilizer purchased from PetMart almost 2 yrs ago.

If you want to use Coralife then my recommendation is the 3X as the 12X is overkill. Btw, the replacement 12X UV Tube cost more than $70+ if I am not wrong.

Fyi, coralife specs as follows:

3X 9W supports tank capacity up to 473litres of water

6X 18W supports tank capacity up to 948litres of water

12X 36W supports tank capacity up to 1895lites of water

yeah the 12X is more for pond use

i would say 3X is good enough even if its underpower

(don't have to sterilizer till so clean)

Bro, if u intend to use it to control ich... there are reports that if the UV wattage is not high enough, it might not kill the ich parasite...

what i heard is smaller need more time to clean up compare to bigger need less time.

if not why there are still with 5w in the market ? or may be ppl looking for cheaper unit?

It is not the UV wattage that determines how fast the ICH parasites are killed.

In fact it is the wavelength within the UV spectrum which damages the DNA structure of the organism so that they can't replicate itself.

And that is why we pass our aquarium water over this light source as it will clean that water body of potential hazards and disrupts their DNA.

As long as the water velocity through the sterilizer (must strictly follow the manufacturer's recommendation of the pump) is within the manufacturer's specs than any organism exposed long enough is killed.

Yup the flowrate is very important, too slow, the itch will multiply back. Too fast, it wun even kill the itch when it is in the UV
