I'm considering having a 4x2x2 tank. Can anyone recommend me suitable skimmers, chillers, lighting, and pumps? I'm looking for reliable equipment with not-so-steep pricing... Thks

List of budget but effective equipments below............

1)Macro venturi or needlewheel skimmer - get the largest you can fit in your sump, 2ndhand unit is not a problem.

2)Sicce extrema pump - as your skimmer pump. Buy a 2ndhand unit, its tough, cheap & reliable.

3)Atman CIRV400 chiller but its a must to modify to an external temp. controller as the build in temp. controller is famous to screw up and cause expensive loses to your live stocks. My advice is to buy 2 additional AC/DC fans to blow the exchanger fins behind the chiller for an effective cooling.

4)Lightings go for 2 x 150W 10,000K DE MH with spider reflectors and 2ft or 4ft T5 lights to fill in the rest of the gaps.

5)Use a Eheim 1262 pump for your chiller. Eheim is famous for reliability and performance, so its most suitable to use it on one of your most important equipment, the chiller. (Inlet from sump, outlet to main tank, plan your piping well)

6)I will use the Rio 32HF for a closed loop circulation to give a good water turnover rate. (No problem even if the Rio fails as you have the reliable eheim 1262 as back up return)

7)Buy 2-3 powerheads for water circulation inside the main tank for temporary & slowly save up for 2-3 x tunze streams(go for those pulsing type, with multi-controller)..............these tunze are never a regret. (I have 4 powerheads for cheap sale if you are interested.)

8)Salifert Test kits - NH4,NO2,NO3,KH,CA (dont go for those inaccurate cheap test kits)

9)PH online monitoring - the prices between the ph pen and monitor is not much a different, so I advice you to go straight for a PH monitor.

10)If you do not have a RO/DI unit and uses tap water for salt mix, I advice you buy and use saltwater from LFS. Change 1-2 pails every week. If you can do that, you can save up on trace elements and supplements in the long run.

11)Choose the right reef safe type of fishes, go for a good cleaner crew first.

Feel free to pm me if you need any help...........I'm not a successful reefer yet, but I've learn the hard & cheapo way............good luck and welcome to this expensive hobby :-)
