as above . is it different from skimmer ?

should i get an fr to place the carbon and phosguard in or just use a net ?

if i were to use a fr, what size pump to drive it ? my tank is 100 gal.

how long before i need to change the carbon and phosphate removing media ?

thanks for any input !

Do a search on FR and Rowa

should i get an fr to place the carbon and phosguard in or just use a net ?

Depends, some of us use run w/o a FR just place in a filter bag in a fast flow area in sump. We use Rowa / Phospban in FR, and dangle a filter bag of carbon

if i were to use a fr, what size pump to drive it ? my tank is 100 gal.

Diff FR recommends diff pumps, but you'll want a 400- 600L pump and tune it till the top media just move. your tank vol will determine how much of media to use.

how long before i need to change the carbon and phosphate removing media ?

Rowa is recommended ~1 -2 mth, but i'll change once my test kit show a rise in PO4. $$ to keep changing often

carbon, is abt every 10 - 14days. Use little but change often, cos it will absorb yr trace elements as well. So either combat with water change or dosing.

my $ 0.02 :peace:

both are very different. :P

activated carbon can reduce or remove

Inorganic Contaminants:

(Organic Arsenic Complexes,Organic Chromium Complexes,Mercury (Hg+2)Inorganic, Organic Mercury Complexes)

Organic Contaminants:

(Benzene,Endrin,Lindane,Methoxychlor,dichloroethane,dichloroethylene,

trichloroethane,Trihalomethanes (TTHMs),Toxaphene,Trichloroethylene, Para-dichlorobenzene,Color,Foaming Agents (MBAS),odor, some organic chemicals like trihalomethanes, pesticides, industrial solvents, polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and some aquarium medications)

Carbon does not remove microbes, sodium, nitrates, fluoride and hardness. Lead and other heavy metals are only removed by very specific types of carbon.

It is used in water treatment plants around the world for processing drinking water.

You can use carbon once in a while to polish the water (run for a few days) or in small amounts for 2 weeks to a month. BTW - recommended aquarium usage is usually 1gram per gallon of water.

Phosphate media -change when phosphate levels begin to rise. (which means the media is exhausted). It would be better not to fluidised your phosguard. :) just run it in a bag in a high flow area.

;)
