SRC Member Melvyn Tan Posted April 16, 2005 Author SRC Member Share Posted April 16, 2005 Where did you get your CL650 chiller, how much? Does it come with warranty? I think most marine lfs sells this chiller, the price can range from $380 to $400++ really depends..the warranty period is one year. SRC Member lee Posted April 16, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted April 16, 2005 and 1 more thing to take note is to allow enuff allowance at the back of the chiller for the hot air to escape.... therefore, i wld recommend u not to place it directly beside ur tank and allow at least 3~4 inches at the back from ur wall....? Bought a 2 months old CL650 to replace my CL280 because of the noise generated by the CL280 and also the CL280 kick-in & out every 5 min. The CL650 is indeed 'silent' (except when it kick out) as compared to my CL280. However the CL650 present another set of problem. It needs a 1500l/hr pump for efficiency hence I replaced my old Atman 650 l/hr canister pump to a Atman w/UV 2600l/hr pump (knowing it will reduce with filter media ext). My temp is set at 27C. For the first few days the chiller will run for about 15 min and kick-in after about 1.5 hrs. This is what I want ! But following weeks till now (using about 6 weeks) it has been kicking-in/out every 5 minutes or so. My canister filter media is cleaned and same as the first. Try to set the temp at 26C & 25C; still the same. My PUB bill last month increased by a whopping S$ 70! Read somewhere here many of the reefers here with thr Atman chiller had done modification by adding an external temp controller and it solved their problem. Anyone can advise where to get the infos to modify the CL650. One thing, my chiller is placed in a cabinet with my Canister filter with only a 1" of allowance (side & back) and ambient temp inside is about 50 degree C. So I add a fan to reduce it to about 40C. Guess this must be one of the main reason why the chiller kick-in so often. Also I might use a Timer Plug to reduce the chiller power-on (did that to my CL280) since I know the tank temp is actually 'OK' although the chiller kick-in so often
SRC Member shoelevy Posted April 16, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted April 16, 2005 here's my update my set is 9mths old now, some problems are starting to surface 1)chiller now starts up with some clanking noise...everytime it kicks in, the sound is there 2)it seems to be kicking in more frequently than b4 and the thermostat no longer detects the same temperature as my external thermometer...no matter what CA value i set, there always seems to be 1 degrees difference what i gather from some people is that the chiller is undersized for my tank...perhaps its time to upgrade
Christof
Hi Melvyn, regarding Resun Chiller CL-6 - I got the next smaller CL-450 on my own ! Last year I bought the first 6 pcs. from Resun and sold here to our local german market ! So far I got one claim just 2 weeks ago ! Let´s see if Resun is going to replace the defect part free of charge with next delivery - as they only grant 1 year of warranty ! I personally so far will be happy with the CL-450 - it´s cooling down the water to 26° C in my 500 Ltr. tank - without problems ! I added the chiller in between the pump and the protein skimmer so I could save the money for additional pump and indeed the costs for the power of additional pump ! Next summer period is starting up soon - i hope that the machine is reliable and even running as good as last summer ! The design is really "europeen like " so really like the design of the machine and even packing is strong and good ! regarding noise - i have the chiller under my tank inside the cabinet and usually leave one door open to make sure that the air circulation inside the cabinet will be ok ! But I suppose even in case i close the front doors of my cabinet the chiller will still work well - as i have no back side at the cabinet ! You really will get used to the additional small noise caused by the chiller but it´s acceptable to me ! Frankly speaking I have had no other chiller in my hands so I can´t compare the loudness of the different chillers ! Here in Germany they are really expensive and the view ones available are even made in China as far as i know brand Aqua Medic !! There´s another one italian made should be really good but extremly expensive ! Here in Germany I don´t have to pay that much attention to the costs for the power consumption as the chiller is running from end of June or July to end of August this is our local summer ! another advantage ! Before i got the new chiller I´ve been using a small air vent from welding machine ! I could get the temperature hold at 29°C but tons of water were blown away so i have had to refill the water in big volumes ! With the new chiller no problem ! hope this will help you a little ! best regards Christof

Over at our end, the highest recorded temperature these few days is about 34-35 degrees celcius, room temperature (my home) about 33 degrees !!! Am crossing my fingers that the resun will be faithful in its cooling capacity and reliability, of which so far it still prove its mettle. SRC Member Melvyn Tan Posted April 29, 2005 Author SRC Member Share Posted April 29, 2005 HI all, Just wondering wat's the electric bill like for CL650 per month?? additional of $20 to our normal bill?? Think it ranges from S$20 plus to some reportedly S$70 plus. I think the best configuration for a chilling system in our Aquarium is to employ a fix-up to our current Home Air-con system - better still if its an inverter system. This will definitely be a good idea if the current home is undergoing renovation and can pipe-in the refrigerant pipings from the compressor unit to the Titanium heat-exchanger next to the sump tank for chilling purpose - will have stable temperature and cheap running cost. Redsun is no good (high maintenace plus running cost) and cheap - must think twice to buy 4. Buy other type (with recommendation) and cost effective. Your answer: 1, 2, 3 or 4? SRC Member Tigger Posted September 1, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted September 1, 2005 Updates My CL650 is more than a year old, ~14 months Additonal info Total pump wattage used in tank - 150W 300W of MH 1. Chiller seems to work much long. Increase in run time of abt 20% 2. Fan coil seems to sound louder, but still bearable 3. Like most bro reported here, chiller product loud "tug" sound when cut-off. Sometime have, sometime dont have. 4. Have not service the chiller or pump (Sicce Extrema) used to feed the chiller Overall conclusion is Resun CL650 is an excellent buy. SRC Member May&Bruce Posted October 25, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted October 25, 2005 I am using a CL450 on a 5 foot 150 gal tank! It works ok, but do use a pump with the correct flow rate...too low and won't cool enough, also too high and wont cool enough. I am taking my tank from 29C down to 26C and this chiller will do it. Chiller comes on for about an hour or so so, then is off for about an hour or so.....in other words the duty cylce is about 50%, which I think is OK. Am reasonably happy with the Resun - it seems to do the job but is probably working on the border. Even though it is cooling my tank adequately, the 650 model would probably be better. I read somewhere that best to always buy one size bigger than is necessary. Anyway, thew Resun price is VG. Wish the display showed decimal points though!
