No need to SHOUT! We are here to give our limited help B)

You are right that the height of the tank from the sump matters. The higher it is, the weaker will be the flow because the pump has to push the water against gravity. There should be a graph on the box showing flow vs height for that pump. Alternatively, you can do a search on the net for it. From this graph you can get the flow rate for the height of your set-up. The Extrema you quoted has 2500 l/h @ 0m.

The rule of thumb is a flow rate of 6 times the capacity of you system per hour. For example, if the total volume of your system is 100 liters, look for a pump that can give 600 liters per hours at the height required.

Note: the "rule" of 6 times is a very loose figure. I know of systems that goes as high as 12 times and systems as low as 3 times. But, 6 times is a good starting point.

Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be, be one.

btw after checking the graph i found out that the pump only work at 1500 liter per hour at 1.5m. My tank could be slightly higher than that. And after using a online calculation i found my tank liters to be 254.85 liters. Which means i would only have a flow rate of 5x. I ask the person at eAN he said it okie but i would still like to hear frm u. As i would try not to fork out another $$60 to get a better pump.

Hi Bro,

I use the Quiet One 3000 for my 3x2x2, I think it's a good pump and very powerful. Hope this might help.

B)

how much u paid for it??? cos actually i got a full set frm eAN and they do not have anymore cheap pumps avaliable only left wit those high ends ones so i got to top up 60 for the high end ones or just stick wit this.... sigh!!!!!

Honestly, I think ur pump should be OK, maybe a little bit slow flow, but as long as there is enough flow to bring back the water, it should be OK.

Dont waste money first. Monitor it unless it really sulks that u have no choice then change loh! B)

haa really hmm ya i guess than i keep it that way... but actually how do u define like lousy when u use it.... i mean how would u be able to know its not functioning well authough there is a return flow.

I think for pump important is the heat and noise produce. If the heat and noise produce suddently change from normal operation, then something must be wrong with the shaft or the rotor. Normally it's not worth to repair, instead just get a new one. :P

thanz pal hee now i get to save 60 bucks muhahaa aniway i saw the forum they selling rio seio 820 for $65 at petmart seems like a good deal.... its like 820 gallons per hour right??

Confirm, Seio M820 is used for wave making... can't be used as a return pump

You can looking for 2nd items Ehiem 1260 or similar in the buy/sell forum.

Get a reliable return pump... else you'll get lots of headache :pinch:

My suggestions: Ehiem can't go wrong with this fellow :yeah:

If funds are limited (that should be applicable to 90% of us, right  ), stick with this pump for the time being. 5 times turn over should be OK. Anyway, if you need to increase the flow rate, you can change the pump later. Use the money you save now for live stock. No point have SOTA (State Of The Art) equipment, but keeping water and live rocks only  . My 2 cents worth!
