There lived a family in the poor suburbs of India. The family comprised the poor widowed seamstress mother and her young school-going boy. Life was quite difficult as they had to try to make ends meet. Nonetheless, she still sent her child to school akin to those who can afford schooling for their children.

One day, the little boy came crying home from school. He lamented that his classmates were jeering and belittling him for wearing torn and spoilt shoes. He demanded that his mother get him a pair of new sparkling shoes from the shoe shop.

The poor mother could not afford to buy the shoes so she resorted to making them. Every evening, she would knock on her neighbours' doors, begging and pleading for frags of cloth so as to use them to make the shoes for her son.

A few days later, the pair of shoes was finally completed after the mother's long nights of burning the late night's lamp.

The boy wore the new shoes to school. Immediately, he was greeted by loud guffaws and jeering from his classmates They were so tickled to see his pair of patchworked shoes. The boy felt humiliated. He started to have negative thoughts.

He believed his mother is out to harm him. He believed his mother disliked him. He believed his mother did not love him. All these bitter thoughts kept swirling in his head till he decided that he would leave this home. Away from the mother who was out to humiliate him.

One night, he packed up a small bag while his mother was sleeping. Took whatever remaining coins in the piggy bank and stepped out into the open. He was going to town. He wanted to discover the bright prospects of town. He wanted to leave the mother whom he thought, an uncaring one. He was gonna seek his fortune in the city. Away from his despised poverty.

Upon reaching the city, he marvelled and wondered at the grandeur of the city. The 'tarred' road, the cemented floorings and the many brickwalls of the buildings. Soon he grew hungry, stopped by a shop, intending to buy some food, his coins could only get him a small bun. He gobbled it up...intending to start seeking his riches after the small meal.

As he walked, he soon realised that there were many children sitting on the sides of the streets. The more he saw, the more he felt puzzled. Why are they there? What are they doing? He decided to satisfy his curiosity. He stertde working towards one of them.

There was a bowl infront of one of the boys and it contained some coins. The boy was begging for more coins. Then he saw something that changed his life...

Right before him, the boy who was kneeling at the sides of the road has no legs.

Turning around, he ran as fast as he could in the direction of the place that he had deserted. When he reached home, he immediately flung himself into the bosom of the teary-eyed mother who had been worried sick by his disappearance. Crying with tears of joy, relief and repentance, the lives of the mother and the boy had chnaged dramatically. This boy grew and turned out to be a successful entrepreneur in India today.

This is a true story that has touched many souls when it was told to them. To me it offered me this lesson...

Let he who has legs to wear shoes, not lament unless he is those who have no legs for shoes. :nc:

Whereas children in Singapore are lamenting over having no Heelys to wear....

Sometimes, when we are tired of working and the everyday stresses of life, it might be good to take a break and travel to less developed countries.

There are others out there eating without knowing when their next meal will be..... people with less money, less luxury goods, but still happier than us...

Somehow it makes all my daily complaints seem so insignificant... Morale of story: Take time off to reflect on the good things in our lives. We are living in bliss, yet blissfully unaware of it.

:peace:

I don't understand the story..did he run home because he was afraid of having his legs chopped off? Or did he think he could only earn $ if he had no legs? Why did'nt he think about walking around with a bowl?

Always something more important than fish.
