Hi all, i'll soon be setting up another tank and would like to go for a DSB.

does a DSB will give negative effects in the long run?

thanks to all comments.

Heard from someone that we need to change it after 3 - 5yrs. ;)

Beside this, it seems to be the "blue eye boy" now in terms of filtration. :D

the debates and arguments of Berlin, Jaulbert, Bare tank coupled with power skimming, mixed system, etc........ has been going on for ages with inconclusive results.

majority of the americans seems to employ the jaulbert method coupled with a plenum. while the europeans seems to prefer the berlin. some japanese hv been known to hv bare tanks coupled with a powerful skimmer.

IMHO, thee is no hard and fast rule as to which is better. think it all boils down to individual preferences.

juz me 2 cents. ;)

does taking up alot of space counts as a disadvantage?

Suppose so - may be very unsightly to have 6-8" of sand that can be viewed from the front. Sometimes, due to refraction and internal reflection of light from thick glass, some unsightly algae can also grow at the front panel.

Personally I enjoy a DSB though, it's interesting to watch the interaction of animals that reside in/on the sand.
