New 2 feet tank FOWLR

Recommended Posts

1. I read the forum at arofanatics that you should not turn on your protein skimmer until the tank has fully cycled. Is that true? Cos I turned on my skimmer since I set up my tank. What is the reasoning behind turning off skimmer?

2. Saw 1 crab in my tank, 6-7 bristleworms and 1 clam. At first, I tot the clam was a piece of chipped of LR but suddenly it started to climb up the LR and upon closer inspection realise what it is. Going to try to catch the crab. As for the clam, necessary to get rid of it?

3. My tank's temperature is 30 Degrees celcius. Should i lower it? If so, any brand of fans to recommend?

4. My wavemaker (Eden 228) blows air bubbles into the water. Is this good or bad? I saw somewhere that bubbles should be reduced in the tank. Any comments?

actually...I have read in many reefkeeping magazine to run your skimmer from DaY 1...your tank will still cycle even if you run the skimmer.

Leave the clam alone. But the crab...get rid of it if you can or you'll have a pest that kills off your smaller fishesin months to come. bristleworms...they are good scavengers...personally..I dislike them...so I'll feed them to my triggers.

Try to lower your tank temp to 27 degrees. those computer AC fans are great as long as you dun splash water on them. The commercial ones for hobbyists are a litle overprices.. you can also try LFS like Aquastar, they have cheap clipon fans for sale

Yup...removed the bubbles..dun use the tubing accesories for the eden...let the whole eden submerge in the water.

Happy reefing

Weird that you are naming arofanatics that the people there said that you should not turn on the skimmer. In fact most of the people there on their skimmer during cycling but thats optional. Maybe you are reading one of the older posts. Skimmer can definitely be switched on during cycling.

You can get rid of the bristleworms and crabs if u want. most people dislike them  They can be useful at times though (eat up your unwanted food and dead fish)

Profantec fan is good

What is the reason for not blowing bubbles into the tank? It gives more oxygen doesnt it?

My wavemaker has a tube extending upwards above the water so that air is drawn in and blows out below the water.

I'm thinking of getting another external pump for my protein skimmer, in place of my current submersible one, so that the pump can be placed outside the tank with a tube to draw the water in. Thinking that it'll help to lower the temperature in my tank. How's this idea?

Sigh...Looks like have to move my LR around again to search for the crab. It is hiding in the biggest piece of LR in my tank.....very troublesome to move around. Thanks for the advice though.

er.. doesn't means those with bubbles will have oxygen.. it's the dissolved oxygen that count, so do it away with the bubbles, current is gd enough. My wavemaker has a tube extending upwards above the water so that air is drawn in and blows out below the water.Reason why we dun wan those fine bubbles as it will be splashing out of the tank, making ur equipment to rust.

there's such pump available in the market, hailea or eheim.Sigh...Looks like have to move my LR around again to search for the crab. It is hiding in the biggest piece of LR in my tank.....very troublesome to move around. Thanks for the advice though.

use a chicken essence empty bottle, place it into the tank slightly slanted. With a piece of small prawn meat in it. it will lure crabs into it.

Everything's sold. Back in 2yrs time.
