Hi alaxgan,

Not worth it ,I had it in refugium for more than 2 years .

Well all I started going skimless and keep caulerpa growing right?

Wrong, it didn't help and the money is wasted .

I bought at $85*6=$$$$.Now just leave there and wait for miracle.

Can you share with us your experience as to why it is not working?

I am using MM for about 2 years, my corals are very healthy and macroalgae needs to be trimmed once a month. Initial I did not use a skimmer but did some research, better to do some skimming with my existing Aqua C Remora pro for my 100 gal tank. I do not have any adverse experience with MM and my corals expansion are excellent.

The only deterrent is the cost, I paid $175 for each 10lb bag, now that the price is a lot cheaper. The thing is that you need to replace the mud every 2 years and you can see in Desong's tank that he separated the mud into 2 sections (good idea) for easy mud replacement.

I have also seen a lot of beautiful tanks without MM, I suppose if you plan well and is experienced with good knowledge, maybe you don't need to use MM but on the other hand if you are a newbie and want to kick off well, you can try MM after all the cost is a lot cheaper now.

The problem is down to growing caulerpa to export nuitration.

I don't know what type of caulerpa you keep. But I refer to fern caulerpa which will

give the fastest grow.If those grass type, than without mud also can keep.

For almost 16 months I had fail on fern caulerpa and I had tried many species of fern.It all failed until recently I am able to keep fern .It due to ugrede to a very strong light.

Initially I used the fern caulerpa, does not survive, maybe my MM was not settled in yet. I use grape or caulerpa remosa, initially the growth was slow, took a few months to fill up the tank, the minute I trimmed it, it grows very fast, now I have to trim it every month. I used the 2 tubes of normal fluorescent 11 watts tube on 24/7.

In my case, my first reef tank of 55 gal was about 5 months old using 2 eheim cannister filters and an Aqua C remora pro skimmer, happy with the corals expansion. I changed to a 100 gal tank using a refugium with MM for filtration, I have noticed that the corals even expanded bigger. You can have a look at may tank under this forum in the thread below and you can see the difference, just look at the cynarina polyp expansion.

Alex, in your case, since your coral are doing well, I suggest you leave it why bother to disturb the existing system if it is already well established unless you want to upgrade and give it a try.

hi guys.. just to share some my experiences... i m presently running on MM... which i have incorporated into my system beginning of the year... and i would say that MM system is good for those who just started cycling their tank ...

I face cyno problem when i started using it... and it seem to overgrown the macro algae.. which i have to start to battle it... and i also experience not much success with the fern caulerpa... at the same time i have to incorporate a phosphate reactor to control my phosphate....

After battle for a while decided to incorporate something with the MM ..... i clear the macro algae with all the cyno overgrown on it... and add in livesand to help to speed up the maturing process... and till date... everything is under control... all my corals are growing well... and opening up too... and some of the corals has open up more the a foot in size.... i have managed to keep sps, lps and softies... and i have great success in keeping the caulerpa the grass type... and all this while i still have my H&S skimmer running...

With all this years of keeping this hobbies ... i do feel that all the system recommend by the different experts in this field ... each has it success story to tell as well as failure too... it boils down to the individual hobbyist who is using the system ... if a hobbyist whom don't wish to take time to learn nor to do the necessary husbandry chores in maintaining their tanks and wish to take short cuts... no matter how good the system is ... it will surely fail...

Each of us can maintain a successful marine tank ... just be open to all the system available in the market... be creative... to incorporate or modify things which will enhance yr system... cos no one else has better knowledge then yrself regards to yr tank..... and it will be very fun... esp so if your system keeps getting better each day.... :D:D:D

Its the same mud from mangrove but the mangrove in our area is highly polluted and its nutrients are not as high enff.

Like wat hmkui said.. there is no short cut in our hobby.. I myself am using MM, so far it is maturing and I do not need to dose anything else except Cal. to maintain

I think the mud is a different mixture with some golden particles.

The information can find at www.inlandreef.com.

As far as I know some LFS had try out and later convert to DSB.

For keeping the fern caulerpa I am using OSRAM delux F 36W 4400K

2800 lux (Those type with one socket with four PL tubes and is about 1 ft)

and running 24/7.
