I wish to enquire if i plan to have 5ftx2.5ftx2.5ft tank

I wish to replicate a indo pacific patch reef however

hosting

1) yellow tangs

2) naso

3) powder blue

4) hippo

5) convict

6) achilles

Q1: understand achilles are difficult to maintain so are some of the above

and apparently yellow tangs are easier as advocated by Robert fenner

can mix as above

Q2: how many can maintain as guide, bearing in mind i may move to full reef in future

Q3: If i wish to keep a group of yellow tangs instead 5 i understand is suggested by John Tullock in 1 of his books, have any of u had seen in websites or have experience in mix?

thanks

the rule of thumb is 1 tang per 40gallon of water...

but in singapore the rule of thumb is as many as u wish per gallon of water...hahahha...

from wat i understand, some tangs are more aggressive than others...eg, sohal has terrible temper and AT too...others like red sae sailfin and alantic blue are more gentle...

my yellow tang whacks the hell out of my sailfin though the sailfin is much larger...

try not to keep too many of the same species in 1 tank, such as 5 YT in a single tank..the more they look like each other, the more they will fight...similarly for other fishes like gobies and watever not..only schooling fishes like chromis and anthia won't fight...most fishes are territorial..

its nice to have a school of YT, i wish i can do tat, but make sure they have enough space...5 ft is too small for 5 YT...that's just my opinion, u might think otherwise...

enjoy reefing!!!

u cant keep both PBT n At together rite?

As a rule of thumb, try to avoid tangs that have similar shape and colors.

Esp with closet terrors like the ATs... :)

Hi slcw, I've tried 10 yt, 4 hippo, 1 powder blue in my 6 ft tank b4, all from ML. Well, yt are very territorial, u need to create alot of hidding plc for them. My yt fight among themself only, left other fishes alone. It is very nice to hv a school of yt bcos they are lively fishes and swim around the tank. At times they will swim together, very nice ;)

Yes, it is possible to hv a school of tangs in ur tank, go for the smallest size as they will grow rather fast. My current tang stock:

4 yellow

1 hippo (tame)

1 purple

1 salfin (tame)

1 sohal

1 naso (tame)

1 AT

1 crown (tame)

1 kole (tame)

1 chevron (died recently  ) (tame)

They live happly together, only the yt will fight among themself and sometime the sohal will disturb other fishes. I've converted from a reef tank to FOWLR bcos tangs shit alot man and my corals hv to eat their shit! It is possible to keep different tangs together for FOWLR.

There is one reefer with many beautiful tangs, roidan & his mega skimmer :D

If you're doing an indo-pacific patch reef.....then your AT and YT are out of place anyway.......

not that i read, I have The Natural Aquarium by John Tullock

In replicating an indo patch reef, Yellow tangs are home to shallow patch reefs in the indo pacific.

AT - yes there are not home to indo. this i agree, unfortunately.

Anyway, thanks

thanks also sotongball.
