Newbie in setting up marine fish tank

Recommended Posts

Hi guys...I'm trying to start a marine fish tank...

Currently I've already set up the tank and it's cycling now...

I've got a 2-3 inch sea bed which consists of grade #0 below and grade #1 above.

I've got a dolphin cannister filter which consists of 3 layers and a weipro 2011 skimmer.

I've been running my tank for abt 2 weeks now....

What shall I do next?

Add in Live rocks? How would I know if my tank has been cycled? (I aldy added a prawn in)

My tank is 2ft x 1.5ft...

The salt level is ok...checked it...

Am I missing out on anything? Pardon me for my ignorance....

Thank you guys for helping me out....

Also, my weipro skimmer is using a 1500 powerhead. Is it too powerful? Cos I can't seem to control the water level of the skimmer....does it have to below the line of the skimmer?

Is there anyplace where I can get cheap live rocks? What's the recommended amount for a 2ft tank?

Lastly, what sort of lighting should I use if I want to set up a FWLR tank?

Thank u so very much gurus....your hellp is greatly appreciated. :)

Add the LRs now... no point running the tank without the LRs. Addition of LRs will start another cycle... for 2ft tank.. try getting about 20kg of LR first... it really depends on how u want to scape. You can get cheap LRs at pasir ris farms.. should be less than $8 per kg...

Lighting wise.. FOWLR doesnt really require lightings.. the lights are for yr viewing pleasure.. u can use FL but it might look a bit dim... but there's no harm to the fishes... otherwise u can go for T5 or maybe PL but since their price is almost the same now.. T5 will be better

I think it is too powerful... The water level should be just slightly above the neckline where the collection cup connects to the body. It would be ideal if you can :

I ) tap control the outlet of the PH to allow for a slower flow... as the skimmer body is short( the idea is to provide a longer reaction time, hence a slower flow thru the body).

II) Attached another air-valve tap to the control the air flow... a lesser inlet air flow will give you finer bubbles & eventually dryer skimmate.

III) The skimmer outlet tap should be slightly open only... there should be few bubbles escaping out.

The above configuration gave me the best skimate yield, dark, and about 2 cm every 3 days or so
